Internships and Career Preparation

Many Augustana biology students participate in internships and research opportunities as part of their work for the biology major or minor. Internships and research opportunities take place in a variety of settings and can concern any of the different areas of biology, from molecular genetics to prairie ecology. Internships usually take place in either clinical settings, research settings, or educational settings.

Clinical Internships

Biology students enrolled one of the pre-professional programs have been involved at internships at many hospitals, doctor's offices, and clinical settings throughout Illinois. Hospital locations for internships have included Rush-Presbyterian Hospital, Loyola Medical Center, and Cook County Hospital. Students have also worked in doctor's offices, veterinary clinics, and physical therapy/occupational therapy settings located within the Quad Cities Area. One student interested in the training aspect of physical therapy even did an internship with the Chicago Cubs!

Research Internships

Research internships often allow students to do hands-on work by aiding a professor in their research or by conducting research of their own. These internship opportunities often take place over the summer at research universities throughout the United States. Students gain valuable educational experiences that introduce them to career and research possibilities and complement their work in the lab and classroom at Augustana.

Educational Internships

Educational internships allow students to gain valuable experience in a non-clinical setting tailored to their area of interest. Educational internships often provide students with contacts and experience that will be valuable when they join the work force. Augustana students have done educational internships in many interesting locations, including: Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, The Shedd Aquarium of Chicago, Abbot Laboratories, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the Tennessee Aquarium, the Niabi Zoo, Yellowstone National Park, the Bureau of Land Management (Salem, Oregon), Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium (Fort Myers, Florida), and Lassen Volcano National Park in California
