(See latest on Debate team tournaments and news)

Augustana fields regionally and nationally competitive policy debate teams. Students at all levels of experience are welcome: recruits have ranged from students with very limited experience to the Top Speakers at both high school nationals and Lincoln/Douglas national championships. Our teams have won hundreds of tournament championships, including the National Debate Tournament (NDT). Freshmen have travelled to Wake Forest, North Carolina, Kentucky, Northwestern, Baylor, Novice and Junior Varsity Nationals, the N.D.T. and a variety of regional tournaments.

We are delighted to welcome our new Director of Debate, Max Archer. Max joined Augustana’s faculty in the summer of 2008. As a debate for the University of North Texas, Max qualified to the N.D.T. three times, reached the elimination rounds at the Cross-Examination Debate Association(CEDA) national tournament and was twice selected to CEDA’s All-American Team. Just before joining us, Max helped coach the Kansas State squad which finished the year ranked 6th in the nation in the CEDA sweepstakes and 5th in the N.D.T. rankings.

Scholarship

The Debate Union offers a variety of debate scholarships (from $500 to $2,500 per year) to persons committed to participation on the team. These scholarships are renewable for four years and are distributed by the director and assistant director of debate.
