Communication Studies

Why Communication Studies?

Communication skills are universally recognized as the key to successful careers. But polished communicators who have nothing to say will do themselves and the world no good. Therefore, a vital part of our philosophy and curriculum centers on ethical reflection on issues of substance. Our grads are communicators with a purpose, people who have both marketable skills and the ability to reflect on the consequence of living in a world so centered on the values of the marketplace.

And so, we teach both how to produce news and how to critique it; how to understand yourself and your relationships in the context of a bigger world; how to understand the seductive forces of advertising and other messages sometimes meant to deceive; what it means for a message to be political; and how to craft arguments that have a chance to effect change. In short, the faculty are committed to a curriculum focused on thinking, writing, and speaking with both reason and passion.
