Greek Life at Augustana
Your son or daughter may be looking for a way to get involved and connected on campus. Joining a fraternity or sorority might be just what he or she is looking for.
Membership in one of Augustana's 14 Greek letter organizations will contribute to your son or daughter's college experience by offering an academic support system, leadership opportunities, interaction with Augustana faculty and administrators, education and training through the Greek Life Educational Program Series, chances to give back through service projects in the Quad City community and beyond and life long friendships. With so much to offer you can see why students involved in Greek life are highly satisfied with their college experience and tend to graduate from college at a higher rate.
What is a Greek organization?
A Greek organization, also known as a fraternity or sorority, is a group of men or women who are brought together by shared values and purpose. In general all of our groups are based on principles and purposes that include friendship, honor, truth, knowledge, service, and scholarship. Each of our chapters works to instill these principles in their members through programs and chapter events.
What are the benefits of fraternity and sorority membership?
Fraternities and sororities are not just social clubs. Greek Life at Augustana is multi-faceted; there is something in it for everyone, including your son or daughter. The benefits of Greek membership include:
Leadership and involvement: Greeks have an organized committee structure which offers their members a unique opportunity to get practical and applicable leadership experience. Greek leadership experiences help to prepare students with skills such as time management, public speaking, conflict resolution, event planning, facilitation and delegation that will be essential for their success in the world of work or graduate school.
Scholarship: Academic success goes hand in hand with extracurricular success. Each chapter has a Scholarship Chair who is responsible for emphasizing academic achievement within the chapter.
Social: The Greek Community will enhance your son or daughter's experiences with its social opportunities. Greek members build numerous relationships and life long friendships within their chapter and other Greek groups.
Intramurals: Augustana's Greek Community is proud to be a major part of the College's intramural activities. Greek participants develop physical skills, practice their sportsmanship, and gain valuable lessons in teamwork while having a great deal of fun.
Philanthropy: Most students are surprised to find out that the Greek Community performs upwards of 7,000 hours of service in the community each academic year. Whether the task is cleaning up trash, visiting a nursing home, tutoring children or raising money for pediatric illness at the annual Dance Marathon, Greeks are always willing to help out.
How can your son or daughter join?
If your son or daughter is interested in joining a fraternity or sorority they will have the chance to participate in Greek recruitment, sometimes referred to as "Rush". Greek recruitment occurs late in the winter term to allow students to acclimate to Augustana and the demands of their academic work. During recruitment students will have a chance to meet members of each of our Greek chapters.
