President Bahls recognized for fundraising leadership
February 27, 2014
On Sunday, Feb. 23, the Association of Lutheran Development Executives (ALDE) recognized Augustana President Steve Bahls in Jacksonville, Fla., as the Outstanding Executive for 2013.
The award nomination cited details about President Bahls’ successful leadership of the college’s Authentically Augustana capital campaign, raising more than $152 million against a $100 million goal.
President Bahls also has been instrumental in strengthening the college’s financial health and transforming the college landscape through major capital projects, including the restoration of historic Old Main, the integration of the existing Tredway Library with a new Center for Student Life, and the construction of the Austin E. Knowlton Outdoor Athletic Complex, now widely regarded one of the best outdoor athletic stadiums in NCAA Division III athletics.
Looking back at these achievements, Augustana Vice President for Advancement Lynn Jackson said, “I have worked alongside Steve for five years and can without hesitation say he is the reason we achieved such tremendous success in our recent comprehensive campaign. Steve understands the power of philanthropy for both the college and its donors, and he actively works with our Advancement office to join the two and fulfill the college’s mission.”
Clyde Andrew Walter ’10, director of stewardship at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, Ill., nominated President Bahls for this award. Upon learning that Bahls would receive this award, Walter said, “I knew Steve would be an ideal nominee for this award. He is committed to advancing the mission and work of Augustana and what it takes to do that work. He views development work as a vocation”
Walter continued, “Steve once told me that fundraising is one of his favorite parts of the job – that he loves the opportunity to make dreams come true for donors in ways that support the mission and work of the college.”
In 2006, this same award was granted to another person with Augustana ties: retired Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Foundation Director and current member of the Augustana College Board of Trustees, Rev. Donald Hallberg.
