Celebration of Holiday Jazz and more

February  05, 2014

The Augustana Jazz Ensemble will present its winter term concert on Friday, Feb. 7, at 8 p.m. in Centennial Hall (3703 7th Ave.). Two smaller combos also will perform on Wednesday, Feb. 12, in Larson Hall within Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts (3701 7th Ave.). The concerts are free and open to the public.

The ensemble's program, led by director Joseph Ott, will feature a wide range of holiday music written specifically for jazz ensemble. Among the selections, the ensemble will present parts of Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," rearranged by Duke Ellington and Billie Strayhorn. Also included in the concert are selections in the style of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, as well as reimagined favorites arranged by some of Joseph Ott's United States Air Force Band colleagues.

Scott Reynolds '15, a music education major from Elgin, Ill., said, "Although the holiday repertoire selection may seem a bit out of season, I can guarantee that the high-powered energy will make one momentarily appreciate the intense weather we've been having lately."

The February 12 performance will include two jazz combos, one directed by Department of Music faculty member Jim Dreier and the other by Ott. The combos will showcase compositions from some of jazz's great players: Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan and Charlie Parker, as well as compositions from all eras of jazz.
