Video: Lemuel Wade '89 returns to direct 'Hansel and Gretel'
November 12, 2013
Opera @ Augustana will present "Hansel and Gretel' by Engelbert Humperdink at 7 p.m. Nov. 22-24 in Wallenberg Hall inside the Denkmann Memorial Building.
Tickets are $14 for the general public; $12 for senior citizens, students and Augustana employees; and $8 for children.
The production is being directed by internationally renowned singer, dancer and director Lemuel Wade '89, who directed Opera @ Augustana's production of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" in 2012.
"Hansel and Gretel" is adapted from the original Grimm Brothers fable, the story of two starving children. When their mother sends them into the dark forest in search of strawberries, they soon encounter the kind Sandman and Dew Angel. After spending an evening in the forest protected by these creatures, they are soon captured by the evil Witch who has a sinister reason for fattening up the children with sweets.
"'Hansel and Gretel' is a really lovely rendition of the well known children's tale with a great cast and a fun story line," said Jens Hurty '15, a music education and music performance major from Moline, Ill., who plays the father of Hansel and Gretel.
"It has been a great experience working with Lemuel Wade on this show, as well. We all appreciate the chance to work with such an experienced director who really knows how to help make our characters come alive."
After graduating from Augustana, Wade continued his studies at The Boston Conservatory where he earned a master's degree in vocal performance. He has toured throughout the eastern United States and Europe in musical productions such as "Hair," "Guys and Dolls" and "Jesus Christ Superstar." He spent much of 2012 directing George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess," first in Naples, Italy, at the Teatro Di San Carlo, and then at the Cincinnati Opera.
Tickets may be purchased through the Augustana Ticket Office at (309) 794-7306 or at augustana.edu/tickets.
