Augustana Crew to host Home Regatta Oct. 12
October 04, 2013
Augustana College's club crew team will host its home regatta, the Trinity Quad Cities Classic, from 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Sylvan Boathouse, 1701 1st Ave., Moline.
Now in its 15th year, the team is made up of approximately 30 Augustana students, both men and women. The crew team has a novice rowing program and also a varsity program for the more competitive, experienced rowers.
This fall the crew team will compete in five regattas from Des Moines to Cincinnati. The home regatta will be the season’s first competition for the novice rowers.
“Crew is all about teamwork,” said Nicole Swanberg, Augustana senior and president of the club crew team. “It really is the ultimate team sport; we have to be in time or else the boat will not move as efficiently as it could. For me, it’s all about the relationship I foster with my teammates. Seeing the sunrise every morning is an added bonus.”
This year Augustana has partnered with Two Rivers YMCA, and is welcoming a new coach from the YMCA, Deidrah Kennedy. The partnership will provide the Augustana team with expertise, and the two organizations will share rowing resources. (See related story, Crew team to partner with Two Rivers YMCA)
