Camp Kesem brings week of fun to 57 youngsters
August 01, 2013
Augustana's chapter of Camp Kesem hosted 57 children and their families at its second camp last week at the YMCA camp near Des Moines. "This is the pay-off for all the hard work the Augustana chapter spends all year preparing," said the group's advisor, Dr. Bohdan Dziadyk. Each of the selected children has at least one parent suffering from cancer. Thirty-five students volunteered at the week-long camp.
At the group's first camp last year, students hosted 35 children.
Camp Kesem is an organization run by college students that hosts a camp for children with a parent who either has or had cancer.
"Special thanks to Jenna Orabutt and Cortney Lebeda, co-chairs of the Augie chapter, for guidance and coordination and to all the counselors for their dedication and hard work," said Dziadyk.
Orabutt '14 founded the Camp Kesem chapter at Augustana. She and her co-chair, Lebeda '13, worked with a core group of students, along with their advisors, Dr. Dziadyk and Dr. S.A. Fenwick.
