Women's track & field sends four to NCAA outdoor championships

Sophomore Jessica Bacon will compete in the 1500 at the NCAA Division III national meet this week in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

Four members of the Augustana women's track & field team will represent the Vikings at the NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championships this week in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. The meet will begin on Thursday, May 23 and will conclude on Saturday, May 25

Senior distance standout Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) has qualified in a pair of events - the 1500 and the 5000. She ran a school record 4:31.29 in the 1500 on April 20 at the Augustana Invitational and her best time in the 5000 is 17:02.77 which she ran at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa on April 25. A year ago Jones was ninth in the NCAA Division III 5000.  

Sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) was right on Jones' heels during the 1500 at the Augustana Invitational and she qualified for the national meet with a time of 4:32.52, which was under the existing school record of 4:35.01 set by Kristy Windy in 1998.  

Junior Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) will compete in the 400 hurdles where she owns the school record with a time of 1:01.56. She set that mark in winning the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on May 4 in Decatur, Illinois.  

The other Augustana competitor at nationals will be junior pole vaulter Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa). Hillyer went 12' 2" at the Twilight Qualifier on May 17 at Paul V. Olsen Track.
