Vikings drop NCAA opener 2-0 to CUC

Seth Davis threw a complete-game three-hitter Wednesday night, but suffered the tough-luck loss in Augustana's 2-0 setback to Concordia-Chicago at Swanson Stadium/ Brunner Field.

MOLINE, Ill.-Shawn Miller's two-run first inning home run accounted for all the scoring Wednesday night as Concordia-Chicago bested Augustana 2-0 in an NCAA regional first round game at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The Vikings, who dropped to 32-10 on the year, take on Webster on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Cougars, now 37-5, advance to take on Adrian at 7:00 p.m. Thursday.

Concordia's Joe Moran worked the count full before coaxing a walk to lead off the game. That brought up Miller, who also went to 3-2 before lofting a Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) offering over the fence in left for a 2-0 Concordia lead.

That would be the last scoring of the night as Davis and the Cougars' Dan Kluss locked up in a classic pitchers' duel. Kluss improved to 8-1 with the win, allowing just four hits and striking out eight in handing the Vikings their first shutout of the season. He walked no one and faced just two batters over the minimum. Davis was tremendous as well, recording his sixth complete game of the season. He gave up three hits and just one after the second inning. He walked two and fanned eight, but suffered his second loss against seven wins.

Augustana never put together a serious threat against Kluss. Jeremy Juhl had a two-out double in the third, but was left stranded. The Vikings got singles by Mark VanNatta (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) and Brandon Jasper (Central DeWitt HS, DeWitt, Iowa) in the fifth, but both were thrown out on the bases and Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) lined a two-out double in the ninth, but was also left on base.

Augustana now faces Webster, a 7-6 winner over Ripon in Wednesday's first game. The 20th-ranked Vikings need a win over the 12th-rated Gorloks (33-9) to advance to play on Friday.
