Hillyer & Smith pace Vikings

Kierra Smith ran the seventh fastest open 400 time in Augustana history on Friday, May 10 when she placed fifth at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Illinois with a time of :58.30.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - Juniors Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) recorded the best finishes for Augustana at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville, Illinois on Friday, May 10. Competing the week after the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship and with finals week looming at the end of the academic term, the contingent that veteran head coach Fred Whiteside took to non-scoring meet was smaller than usual.

Hillyer placed third in the pole vault with a clearance of 11' 1 ½" while Smith took fifth in the 400 with a time of :58.30. Smith, who just last week won both the 100 and 400 hurdles at the CCIW meet, turned in the seventh-fastest open 400 time in Augustana history.

The 400 relay team placed sixth in :52.41 and the horizontal jumps crew also performed well at the meet. Freshman Kayla Bushey (Luther North HS, Chicago, Ill.) took seventh in the long jump with a leap of 16' 10 ½ with sophomore Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) placing eighth at 16' 8 ¾". Senior Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) finished seventh in the triple jump (34' 9 ½") and Moravek was eighth (34' 1 ¼").

The Vikings will be in competition again on Friday, May 17 at their own Twilight Qualifier at Paul V. Olsen Track.
