Vikings stay alive with 7-1 win over Cornell

Freshman right fielder Cheyenne Burnett went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and three RBI Friday as Augustana defeated Cornell 7-1 at the NCAA softball regional in Pella, Iowa.

PELLA, Iowa- Freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) had a big day at the plate and classmate Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) threw five scoreless innings of relief Friday as Augustana defeated Cornell 7-1 at the NCAA regional at Central College. The Vikings improve to 30-13 on the year and will face Washington University at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Cornell's season ends at 23-16.

Burnett's two-run double got Augustana on the board in the bottom of the first. Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) drew a one-out walk and Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) reached on an error. Jamie Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) moved both runners up with a ground out and Burnett scored them with a shot to the fence in left center. After Burnett moved to third on a wild pitch, Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) drew a walk, took off for second and stayed in a pickle long enough for Burnett to cross the plate for a 3-0 Viking lead.

In the top of the second, Cornell's Kari Martin fouled off six straight Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) pitches to eventually earn a leadoff walk. That led to the Rams' only run of the game, which scored on a Viking error. Hintz fanned Kelsey Boss to end the inning and leave runners stranded at second and third.

Augustana extended the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Singles by Christina Pagan (Normal West HS, Normal, Ill.), Miranda Hiemer (Nazareth Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.), along with a Cornell error, led to the runs.

Anderson came on to start the third, relieving Hintz, who fired a complete game on Thursday. The freshman left-hander shut the Rams out over the final five innings, allowing five hits with no walks or strikeouts. She got the win to improve to 11-4 this year.

Augustana added single runs in the third and fourth innings to account for the final. Pagan delivered Burnett in the third with an RBI double to left and Burnett doubled in Behnke in the fourth.

Burnett finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs scored and three driven in. Pagan went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Behnke was 2-for-4 with a run scored and one knocked in.

The Vikings remain alive and will face Washington University at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11.
