Vikings drop close decision in CCIW semi-finals

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - For the second time in two weeks the Augustana men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Wheaton. The first time was in a dual meet at home on April 20 and this one came in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin semi-final on Friday, May 3 at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois.
The Vikings cruised to an easy 5-0 win over North Central in the first round of the CCIW tournament on Friday morning, winning all three doubles matches and then taking fifth and sixth singles before the match was stopped because it reached a decision.
In the match against Wheaton second year head coach Jon Miedema's squad fell behind 2-1 after doubles and then won at four, five and six singles but couldn't make up the deficit. Augustana is now 19-10 on the season and will face Carthage in the third place match on Saturday, May 4.
AUGUSTANA 5, NORTH CENTRAL 0
The Vikings made quick work of the Cardinals with a 5-0 win in the first match of the CCIW tournament. They jumped out in front 3-0 in doubles with three easy victories. Sophomore Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and junior Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, DePere, Wis.) beat Adam Ciccone and Kyle Stiffler 8-2 at number one. Junior Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and senior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) defeated Rustam Saini and Josh Rodig 8-2 at number two. Senior Will Palmer (Schiller International School, Leicester, England) and junior Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) defeated Mason Sass and Jesse Adamson 8-1 at number three.
Heading into singles Augustana needed just two wins to clinch the match. Arnold beat Stiffler 6-0; 6-1 at number six to move to 13-5 while Bayles upped his record to 20-12 with a 6-0; 6-1 win over Adamson at number five.
Lawrence Palmer was leading Ciccone 6-1 at number one and freshman Harald Olsson (Lidingo, Sweden) had a 6-4 advantage on Saini at number two. Will Palmer was ahead of Rodig 6-2 at third singles and Wall was up 6-3 over Sass at number four.
WHEATON 5, AUGUSTANA 4
Just like the match in Rock Island two weeks ago, this one was tight the whole way before the Thunder came away with the 5-4 win to advance into the championship match of the CCIW tournament.
Augustana fell behind 2-1 after doubles. The Vikings picked up a win at number three where junior Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) and senior Will Palmer (Schiller International School, Leicester, England) beat John Bodett and Derek Mumaw 8-2. Bayles and Palmer are now 9-2 on the year.
Junior Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and senior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) dropped a tough 8-6 decision at number two to David Buursma and Miles Greenwald. Arnold and Cullen are now 9-3 on the year. Sophomore Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and junior Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, DePere, Wis.) fell 8-0 to Ryan Kreis and Josh Ward at number one.
As the match shifted to singles the Vikings needed four wins to advance to the title match but instead split the six matches. Augustana's depth was evident as Miedema's club won at four, five and six. Wall beat Greenwald 6-4; 6-1 at number four and is now 16-14. Bayles took care of Mumaw 6-2; 6-1 at number five to move to 21-12 and Arnold upped his mark to 14-5 with a 6-0; 6-4 win over Bodett at number six.
Lawrence Palmer fell 6-3; 6-3 at number one to Kreis and freshman Harald Olsson dropped a 6-4; 6-0 match to Ward at number two. Will Palmer played three sets with Buursma at number three before losing 6-1; 4-6; 6-3.
