Heaton earns Academic All-District honor

Senior Ben Heaton was named to the Capital One Academic All-District baseball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. He will now be advanced to the national ballot in hopes of being Augustana's 142nd Academic All-American.

Augustana senior pitcher Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) has been a leader for the Vikings both on and off the field throughout his entire career. Today he was rewarded for that combination by being selected to the Capital One Academic All-District Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The right-handed Heaton has put together good numbers for veteran head coach Greg Wallace's 16th ranked Vikings this season. He has compiled a 4-1 record with a 2.44 earned run average in 51 2/3 innings of work. He has made 10 appearances this year with eight of those in a starting role. He has one complete game and one shutout. Heaton has recorded 33 strikeouts while allowing just 14 walks and opponents are hitting .277 against him.

During his career at Augustana he has a record of 15-4 with a 3.34 earned run average in 23 starts with four shutouts. He currently ranks ninth on the school's all-time list in ERA and he has worked 150 innings with 94 strikeouts.

He was named "Pitcher of the Week" earlier this year in the CCIW and is among the league leaders in opponents' batting average, strikeouts and earned run average. He has been instrumental in the Vikings' 27-8 record this season and Augustana is currently 16th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll.

An accounting and finance major with a 3.84 grade point average, Heaton has been nominated for an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. He is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership fraternity and earlier this year he was voted the "Outstanding Accounting Student" at Augustana.

He served as a summer corporate tax intern at State Farm Insurance in Bloomington, Illinois during 2012. He was also a part of an internal audit project at QCR Holdings in Moline during the spring of 2012. Heaton served as a VITA volunteer at Friendly House in Davenport, Iowa where he helped prepare income-tax returns for low-income families.

Heaton has been a peer mentor at Augustana where he advised and mentored new students since 2011. Another project that he has been involved with has been "Lunch Buddies" where he served as a role model for a child who was faced with a difficult home situation.

With his first team academic all-district selection, Heaton now moves on to the national ballot where the Vikings have had great success historically. Since the Academic All-American program began in 1951, Augustana has generated a total of 141 Academic All-Americans and currently rank sixth in the nation (all divisions) in number produced. Augustana is second among NCAA Division III schools and tops in the CCIW. The Academic All-America selection process is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
