Strength in singles carries Vikings in CCIW's NCAA qualifier over Carthage

Junior Emily Kaczmarek provided the clinching point in Augustana's 6-3 win over Carthage in the semi-final round of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin's NCAA qualifying tournament on Tuesday, April 30 at the Lower Campus Courts. Kaczmarek beat Haleigh McPeek at number two singles by a score of 6-4; 6-4.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana came from behind to defeat Carthage 6-3 on Tuesday, April 30 in the semi-final round of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin's NCAA qualifying tournament at the Lower Campus Courts. The win pushed the Vikings to 16-8 overall while the Lady Reds end their season at 11-9. With the victory Augustana moves into the championship round of the NCAA qualifier on Saturday, May 4 against the winner of either number seed Wheaton and number four seed Illinois Wesleyan today in Wheaton, Illinois.

Second year head coach Jon Miedema's team used a surge in singles to overcome a 2-1 deficit after doubles play completed. The Vikings won five of the six singles contests with the clincher coming at number two when junior Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) defeated Haleigh McPeek 6-4; 6-4. That win moved Kaczmarek to 12-17 on the season and at the time of her victory the score was 4-3 in favor of Augustana.  

Minutes after Kaczmarek gave the Vikings their match-winning fifth point, senior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) accounted for the final score when she beat Holly Weber 6-3; 4-6; 6-3 at number six. Wethington is now 3-8 on the year in singles.   Junior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) beat Bari Reynolds 6-4; 6-2 at number one to push her record this season to a glossy 26-3 this year.  

Freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) beat Kelsey Bowen 6-1; 6-3 at number four and she is now 19-9 on the season. The other singles victory came at number five when sophomore Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) beat Kirsten Peterson 6-2; 6-3 to move to 9-6.  

Sawyer and MacDonald beat McPeek and Reynolds 8-4 at number one doubles and are now 19-9.  

Augustana defeated Carthage 5-4 back on September 12 and the Vikings now own victories over the Lady Reds in four of the last five matches after losing 12 straight from 1998 through 2009.
