Viking drop CCIW contest at Elmhurst

Sophore Danny Fifer went two for three with two runs scored Sunday, but Augustana fell 8-4 at Elmhurst.

ELMHURST, Ill.-Augustana couldn't take advantage of five Elmhurst errors Sunday, dropping an 8-4 decision to the Bluejays on the road. The 16th-ranked Vikings fall to 26-8 overall and 12-6 in the CCIW. Elmhurst climbs to 16-16 on the year and 7-11 in the conference.

Augustana parlayed four singles and the first Elmhurst miscue into two first-inning runs. However, the Vikings had Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) cut down at the plate on the front end of a double steal and also left two runners stranded in the inning.

In the second, Augustana again left two runners on after another error and a Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) infield hit. The Bluejays got to Viking starter Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) for four runs in the bottom of the frame. Dave Wolak's two-run double was the big hit.

Despite going without a hit, Augustana tied it with two runs in the fourth. Two hit batters, a dropped third strike and two more Elmhurst errors contributed to the scoring. Those would be the last runs the Vikings put on the board, as they stranded a pair of runners each in the fifth and seventh innings.

Elmhurst regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth and extended it to 6-4 on Eric Stevenson's solo homer in the fifth. The Bluejays' final two runs came in the bottom of the eighth.

White went 3 2/3 innings and took the loss, falling to 3-3 on the year. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, but fanned seven. Fifer went two for three with two runs scored and seniors Mark VanNatta (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) and Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) were each two for four.

The Vikings are back in action at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field on Wednesday, May 1. Grinnell visits with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
