Beauchamp breaks hammer record; Vikings win four events at Beloit Relays

Junior Kierra Smith won the 400 hurdles at the Beloit Relays in a time of 1:02.75 to help the Vikings finish second in the team standings on Saturday, April 27.

BELOIT, Wis. - A school record in the hammer throw from junior Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) and victories in four individual events helped key a second place finish for the Augustana women's track & field team on Saturday, April 27 at the Beloit Relays in Beloit, Wisconsin. The Vikings scored 181.5 points to finish just 10 points behind St. Ambrose's winning total of 195 in the 10-team meet. Judson was third with 120.5 and Beloit took fourth with 114. Carroll (100), North Park (60), Chicago State (22), Knox (15), Rockford (12) and Michigan Tech (3) rounded out the field.

Beauchamp did not win the hammer throw as she took second with a toss of 157' 6", breaking her own school record of 156' 9" set just one week earlier in the Augustana Invitational. When she started the season she held the mark with a throw of 156' 1" in 2012. She also added an eighth place finish in the discus with a toss of 102' 9".

Senior Kirstillyn Pohlman (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) went to work in the 10,000 on Friday night and came away with a victory with a time of 41:24.95. Junior teammate Lydia Boyle (Grayslake HS, Grayslake, Ill.) was fourth in 52:55.54.

Junior Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) led a one-two sweep for Augustana in the 400 intermediate hurdles. She won the event with a time of 1:02.75 while freshman Annie Martines (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was second in 1:07.77.

Sophomore Lizzie Lundine (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.) took the 5000 in 18:46.33 and the Vikings placed a total of five runners. Junior Kristen Whiteside (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) placed second in 19:14.08 and senior Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) was fourth in 20:15.24. Freshman Rachel Rodriguez (Mahomet-Seymour HS, Mahomet, Ill.) finished fifth in 20:16.07 and sophomore Rachel Kelly (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was seventh in 20:41.95.

Junior Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) won the pole vault with a clearance of 10' 11 ¾". Freshman Danielle Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was fifth at 9' 11 ¾" with freshman Emalee Leigh (United Township HS, Hampton, Ill.) placing sixth at 9' 5 ¾". Senior Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley HS, Gibson City, Ill.) was eighth with a height of 8' 11 ¾".

Junior Amanda Pease (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) took second in the 3000 steeplechase in 12:14.04. The 400 relay of Hillyer, Smith, freshman Rachel Akmajian (Poudre HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) and sophomore Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) was second in :52.18. The 1600 relay of freshman Stephanie Sorrentino (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), Akmakjian, Martines and junior Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) took second in 4:17.20.

Another second place finish was recorded by the 3200 relay of junior Kristyn Barton (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), sophomore Becca Sund (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.), junior Kelsey Moon (Mundelein HS, Wauconda, Ill.) and senior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) with a time of 10:07.93. Barton finished second in the 1500 in 4:58.57 and Sund took third with a time of 5:00.24. Freshman Jeneen Schier (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) was eighth in 5:12.20.

Moravek was third in the long jump (16' 7 ¾") and sixth in the triple jump (34' 5 ½"). Martines finished third in the 100 hurdles (:16.87) and senior Lauren Hoffman (Wheaton North HS, Winfield, Ill.) was third in the high jump (4' 11 ¾".) and fourth in the javelin (97' 1").

The 800 relay of Akmakjian, Martines, freshman Kayla Bushey (Luther North HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Sorrentino ran 1:52.46 and finished fourth. Bushey added a fifth place in the triple jump with a leap of 34' 9 ½".

Junior Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) finished fifth in the high jump (4' 9 ¾") and eighth in the 100 hurdles (:17.72). Senior Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) took seventh in the triple jump (34' 2") and sophomore Emily Lutton (Elkhorn HS, Omaha, Neb.) was seventh in the high jump (4' 7 ¾"). Sophomore Kris Bowen (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) was seventh in the 800 (2:34.36).

Augustana will head to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championships on Friday, May 3 and Saturday, May 4 in Decatur, Illinois.
