Viking sprinters continue to sizzle at Drake

Senior Greg Patton had a big day Saturday at the Drake Relays, leading off the school record-setting 4x400 relay and competing with the Vikings 4x100 unit that brought home a sixth-place finish.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Augustana sprint corps continued to stay hot, using the platform of the Drake Relays to record a pair of memorable performances on Saturday, April 27 in Des Moines, Iowa. The 1600 relay broke its own school record for the second time in less than 24 hours with a clocking of 3:09.48 and the 400 relay recorded a sixth place finish with a sizzling time of :41.30.

The 1600 team of senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), sophomore Antonio Owens (Naperville North HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.), sophomore David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) and senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.) placed third in the college division final with the time of 3:09.48. That eclipsed the school-record time of 3:10.03 the quartet put up in Friday's preliminaries.  

Voland also competed individually in the 400 hurdles, finishing ninth in the university and college division in a time of :52.15.  

In the 4x100 relay, sophomore David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.), Patton, sophomore Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and Rindone finished in :41.30 to take sixth place in the college division.  

Augustana garnered a 10th-place finish in the distance medley relay. Sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) led off, followed by juniors Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) and Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and senior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.). That unit finished in 10:08.44.  

The Vikings also competed in the 1600 sprint medley, with the team of sophomore Nowlan Savage (Arapahoe HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and juniors Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, La Fox, Ill.), Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and Valle finishing 17th in a time of 3:33.00.
