Vikings finish regular season at 14-3

Sophomore Kate Zisser led Augustana with five assists Saturday as the Vikings defeated Dubuque 26-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Fifteen different Augustana players scored goals Saturday as the Vikings wrapped up regular season play with a 26-0 win over Dubuque at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach Sara Tisdale's Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference champions head into next weekend's conference tournament with a 14-3 overall record. Dubuque fell to 1-11 this season.

Sophomore Kelly Stelzer (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) each scored twice in the first four minutes of the contest as the hosts jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Freshman Shelby Cosman (Marian Catholic HS, St. John, Ind.) made it 5-0 less than a minute later.  

The lead reached double digits on a Ryen Merhar (Oak Park River Forest, River Forest, Ill.) goal with 17:07 to play in the first half and eventually reached 16-0 at the break. A dozen different Vikings found the net in the opening 30 minutes.  

Sophomore Kate Zisser (Kirkwood HS, St. Louis, Mo.) opened the second half scoring at 27:15 and Stelzer added her fourth and final goal of the day two minutes later. Alex Palmisano (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.), Allie Roehrenbeck (Columbus Academy, Gahanna, Ohio) and Merhar added their second goals of the contest and Hilary Kargl (Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.) her second and third as the lead grew to 23-0.  

Handrahan scored her third goal of the day with a behind the head shot at the 7:26 mark and junior Meredith Goodale (New Trier HS, Glencoe, Ill.) closed out the scoring with her first career goal with 2:18 remaining.  

Cosman scored twice in the game to join Stelzer (four), Handrahan (three), Kargl (three), Merhar, Palmisano and Roehrenbeck (two each) with multiple goal games. Zisser dished out a team-high five assists, while Handrahan and sophomore Christina Letmanksi (Glenbard West HS, Wheaton, Ill.) had three each and Roehrenbeck and sophomore Kelly Molloy (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) two apiece.  

Top-seeded Augustana will host fourth-seeded Concordia in a Midwest Lacrosse Conference tournament semifinal on Friday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. North Central, the second seed, and Carthage, seeded third, will play the first semifinal at 3:00 p.m. at Thorson-Lucken Field. The semifinal winners will meet on Saturday, May 4 at 7:00 p.m. for the conference tournament championship, also at Thorson-Lucken Field.
