Vikings come from behind to beat Wheaton 9-8

CAROL STREAM, Ill. - Augustana exploded for four runs in the top of the eighth inning to overcome a two-run deficit and then held on in the ninth inning to defeat Wheaton 9-8 in the opening game of a three-game series on Friday, April 26 in Carol Stream, Illinois. The Vikings pushed their overall record to 25-6 and their College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin mark to 11-4 heading into a home double-header tomorrow with the Thunder at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.
Heading into the top of the eighth inning Augustana trailed 7-5 after Wheaton put four runs on the board against Viking starter Seth Davis (J.K. Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) in the bottom of the seventh. With one out junior right fielder Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) singled and went to second on a ground out for the second out of the inning.
At this time the Vikings broke out the power as senior Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) tripled to plate Van Duyne and senior Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) homered to left center to make it 8-7 in favor of the Vikings. Sophomore Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) reached on an error and went to second on the play. Senior center fielder Mark VanNatta (Rock Island Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) then singled Camalick home to make it 9-7.
Wheaton did not score in the bottom of the eight and Darwin Townsend (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) replaced Davis with two on and nobody out. The Vikings couldn't add to their total in the top of the ninth and the Thunder came to bat in the bottom of the ninth down 9-7. Townsend got the first batter to foul out but then walked Phil Tuttle and gave up a single to Justin Swider.
Senior Rick Erickson (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) came to the hill for Townsend and he walked Desmond Cato to load the bases. Erickson then induced Kyle Mellinger to hit into a force play at second base to retire Cato while Tuttle scored to make it 9-8. However, on the play Swider strayed off third and was caught in a run-down and retired for the final out of the game.
Augustana jumped out in front 1-0 in the top of the first when Van Duyne singled and stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Schmidt.
Wheaton scored three in the bottom of the second to take a 3-1 lead. Augustana had the bases loaded with nobody out in the top of the third off Thunder starter Evan Rahn but could only manage one run to make it 3-2. The Vikings had five hits that produced three runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) had a two run single for the big blow of the inning.
Van Duyne had four hits and Fifer three as the top of the order keyed the offensive surge. Van Duyne scored three runs in the game. Stewart and sophomore third baseman Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) each had two hits with Stewart getting three RBI.
