Vikings go extras to sweep Monmouth

Sophomore Chelsea Lavin had five hits, including a game-winning RBI single in the nightcap, as Augustana swept a doubleheader from Monmouth, 2-0 and 6-5 Wednesday at Carver Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.-Chelsea Lavin's (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) third hit of the game and fifth of the day knocked in Miranda Hiemer (Nazareth Academy, Chicago, Ill.) with the winning run in Wednesday's nightcap, giving Augustana a 6-5 win and a sweep in its doubleheader against Monmouth at Carver Field. The Vikings won the opener 2-0 and are now 23-11 on the year. Monmouth fell to 14-16.

Game One - Augustana 2, Monmouth 0

Starter Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) went six shutout innings and got the win in the opener to improve to 10-5 on the year. She worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth before giving way to reliever Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) to start the seventh. Wiersema retired the Scots for her first save.

Lavin started the Viking third with a double to right. After moving to third on a wild pitch, she was bunted home by Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) to give the hosts a 1-0.

Augustana added an insurance run in the sixth.  Wiersema drew a one-out walk. Pinch-runner Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.) moved to second on a Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) single and came around to score on a Lavin base hit.

Hintz allowed the Scots just three singles, but walked five and hit a batter. In addition to leaving the bags full in the sixth inning, she left two runners stranded in both the first and fourth and one each in the third and fifth.

Lavin, Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.), Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) and Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) each had two of Augustana's nine hits in the game.

Game Two - Augustana 6, Monmouth 5 (10 innings)

With the teams tied at five after nine and a half innings in the nightcap, Wiersema came through with a one-out single in the Viking 10th. Hiemer pinch-ran for her and moved to second on a wild pitch. She held on Nelson's ground out to third, but came around to score the game-winner when Lavin singled to left.

Augustana staked starter Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) to a 3-0 lead after one inning. The freshman lefty set Monmouth down in order in the top and Behnke started the bottom by being hit by a pitch. She scored the game's first run on a passed ball. Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) drove in a run with a ground out and Burnett made it 3-0, plating Watson with an RBI single.

The Scots scored a pair of unearned runs off Anderson in the top of the fourth, but the Vikings answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Nelson and Behnke sandwiched singles around a Lavin double to put Augustana up 5-2.

Wiersema came on in relief of Anderson to start the sixth and Monmouth parlayed two hits, a walk and an error into three runs to tie the game. Augustana missed a chance to regain the lead in the bottom of the inning. After the first two Vikings were retired, a single and two walks loaded the bases, but Watson popped to first to end the threat.

Anderson, who had returned to the circle in the sixth, shut the Scots out the rest of the way, pitching out of a two-on, no-out jam in the eighth. She went 9 2/3 innings to get the win and improve to 7-4 this season. She surrendered five hits, walked one and fanned three, allowed just the two unearned runs.

Lavin had three hits, while Behnke and Tambling had a pair each.

The Vikings wrap up the CCIW portion of the schedule with a doubleheader at North Central on Saturday, April 27. First pitch in Naperville, Illinois is slated for 1:00 p.m.
