Jones and Bacon smash 1500 school record

Senior Sarahbeth Jones and sophomore Jessica Bacon both broke Kristy Windy's school record in the 1500 at the Augustana Invitational on Saturday, April 20. Jones ran 4:31.29 while Bacon was clocked in 4:32.52. Windy's record, set in 1998, had been 4:35.01.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) and sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) both broke the existing school record in the 1500 to help Augustana to a second place team finish in the Augustana Invitational on Saturday, April 20 at Paul V. Olsen Track. The Vikings scored 172.50 points in the eight team event to finish in the runner-up position to Monmouth's winning total of 215.50.

Wisconsin-Whitewater finished third with 164 points while Luther was fourth with 130. Loras (127), St. Ambrose (80), Wisconsin-Platteville (71) and Dubuque (8) rounded out the field.

Jones placed second in the 1500 in 4:31.29 and Bacon was third in 4:32.52. They both finished well under Kristy Windy's school record of 4:35.01 set in 1998. The 1500 was a tremendous race for Augustana as junior Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took sixth in 4:49.19 and sophomore Lorraine Stamberger (LaMoille HS, LaMoille, Ill.) was seventh in 4:52.92. Jones also finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:15.76 with Benge taking third in 2:17.72.

Junior Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) was a double winner as she won the 100 hurdles (:15.28) and the 400 hurdles (1:02.62). The 3200 relay won in 9:50.90. Sophomore Lizzie Lundine (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.) won the 10,000 in 39:14.94 and senior Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) took the triple jump with a leap of 34' 5". Bazely was also third in the long jump (16' 5").

Junior Lauren Schneiderbauer (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) placed second in the javelin with a toss of 112' 1" and junior Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) was second in the hammer with a toss of 156' 9". Junior Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) cleared 11' 2 ¼" to finish second in the pole vault.

The 1600 relay team finished third in 4:06.76 and the 400 relay squad was third in :51.44. In the 3000 steeplechase senior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) was fourth in 12;02.7 and junior Kristen Whiteside (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) took fifth in 12:04.0. Freshman Kayla Bushey (Luther North HS, Chicago, Ill.) was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15' 11 ½" and sophomore Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) placed fifth (15' 10 ½"). Moravek was also eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 32' 7 ¾". Senior Lauren Hoffman (Wheaton North HS, Winfield, Ill.) took sixth in the javelin with a toss of 95' 8".

Freshman Danielle Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) went over 9' 8 ½" to finish seventh in the pole vault and freshman Rachel Akmajkian (Poudre HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) ran 1:02.62 to place fourth in the 400. Freshman Hana Lobsinger (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) placed eighth in the 5000 (19:08.54) and sophomore Emily Lutton (Elkhorn HS, Omaha, Neb.) was eighth in the high jump (4' 7 ¾").
