Rindone breaks 33-year old record in 400

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) took down a 33-year old school record to highlight an impressive Augustana effort at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 20 at Paul V. Olsen Track. The Vikings won the 10-team invitational with 201.50 points to outdistance runner-up Wisconsin-Platteville's total of 161.75. Wisconsin-Whitewater was third (144.50), Carthage was fourth (112) and Monmouth placed fifth (99.50). The rest of the field included Wisconsin-Stevens Point (98), Luther (59.50), St. Ambrose (57), Loras (43.25) and Washington (10).

Rindone, who won two individual events, broke Mike Meyer's 1980 record in the 400 with a winning time of :47.76. He eclipsed Meyer's record of :47.84. In the same race senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took second in :48.04, which is the fourth fastest time in Augustana history. Sophomore Antonio Owens (Naperville North HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) was seventh in :49.74.

Rindone also won the 200 in :21.74 with sophomore David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.) taking second in :22.08 and sophomore Nowlan Savage (Arapahoe HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was seventh in :22.60. Rindone anchored the 400 relay to victory with a time :41.48. He was joined by Devore, Patton and sophomore Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.). Devore also added a fourth place finish in the 100 (:10.98).

The Vikings won a total of five events with senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) taking the 5000 in 15:03.40 and sophomore David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) winning the 400 hurdles in :52.07. Smith was also second in the 1500 with a time of 3:59.18. The 1600 relay of Patton, Owens, sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) closed out the meet with a win of 3:15.14.

The 3200 relay of sophomore Keegan Buttimer (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.), senior Dennis O'Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.), sophomore Alex Odenkirk (Ironwood Ridge HS, Tucson, Ariz.) and senior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) was second in 8:05.96. Sophomore Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) placed second in the 400 intermediate hurdles in :55.21 and was sixth in the 110 high hurdles in :15.95.

Dal Pazzo was third in the 800 in 1:54.30. Junior Andrew Allabastro (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) took third in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:46.2. Sophomore Jacob Benner (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 151' 5". Sophomore Andrew Lulis (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) cleared 14' 1 ¼" to take fourth in the pole vault.

Junior Alex Stockwell (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) ran 9:56.9 to place fifth in the 3000 steeplechase and senior Tommy Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) was seventh in 9:59.6. Sophomore Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was fifth in the 1500 in 4:00.76 with Buttimer placing sixth in 4:01.08 and O'Flaherty grabbing eighth in 4:01.67.

Senior Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) placed fifth in the hammer throw (162'11") and seventh in the shot put (47' 0 ¼"). Senior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) took fifth in the long jump (21' 9 ½"). Junior Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) went 6' 2 ¾" to finish sixth in the high jump and junior Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was sixth in the 800 in 1:55.92. Sophomore Alec Seymour (Riverton HS, Riverton, Ill.) finished seventh in the javelin with a toss of 159' 8".

Augustana, which was ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division III national dual meet power ranking poll, will compete in both the Drake Relays and the Western Illinois Invitational next weekend.
