Event to celebrate the hard work of Augie volunteers

April  19, 2013

Augustana’s Community Engagement Center will host a private volunteer celebration on Thursday, April 25, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Hanson Hall of Science (726 35th St.).

The 18 organizations that received the most volunteers from Augustana this academic year have been invited, along with the students who volunteered with these organizations, to a celebration of their hard work. At the event there will be a ballot box for each organization where students can share their favorite memories from volunteering.

This is an opportunity for the organizations to show their appreciation for the Augustana students who volunteer as well as for the students to share their appreciation for the opportunities that these organizations have provided them.

Laura Mahn, vocational counselor and the coordinator of volunteer and off-campus programming for Augustana, says, “This is the first of what will hopefully become an annual event at Augustana. We know that it takes a lot of time, energy, and commitment from both our students and the organizations with whom they volunteer to work together to improve our community. So, this event celebrates that commitment and reinforces the idea that, at Augustana, we don't simply want our students to view volunteer work as something you do for a couple of hours and then leave behind. Volunteering is a partnership between students who are interested in or concerned about certain issues and the organizations that are addressing those concerns.”

Mahn added, “Our students are not visitors in Rock Island for four years. They are members of this community.”

The organizations that have been invited include: Amber Ridge, ARC, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Black Hawk Literacy Program, Boys & Girls Club, Casa Guanajuato, Children’s Therapy Center, East End Neighborhood Fair, Quad City Arts Festival of Trees, Longfellow Elementary School, Mississippi Valley Blood Center, Putnam Museum, Quad City Animal Welfare, Quad City Botanical Center, Spring Forward Learning Center, WOW (Wide Open Weekdays), VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) and World Relief.
