Rehmert's blast wins game one in split with Wheaton

Junior Jaime Rehmert hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Augustana a 4-2 victory over Wheaton in the first game of a CCIW double header on Tuesday at Carver Field.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana scored all of its runs via the long ball in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin double header split with Wheaton on Tuesday, April 16 at Carver Field. The Vikings won the opener 4-2 in nine innings and dropped the nightcap 4-1 and they are now 20-10 overall and 5-5 in the league.

GAME 1 - Augustana 4, Wheaton 2

Junior first baseman Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) blasted a two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Augustana to a 4-2 victory over Wheaton in the first game of a CCIW double header. Rehmert's blast, her fifth of the season, came with junior shortstop Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) on first base with a single.

Rehmert's heroics came off Wheaton starter, and loser Katie Thornton and it made a winner of Augustana starter Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.). Hintz, who gave up just five hits in nine innings while striking out four and walking four, moved to 9-4 on the season.

Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Katie Yergler walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and came home on a single to center field off the bat of Christina Sandstedt.

The Vikings answered in the bottom of the sixth when senior catcher Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) hit a two-run home run to left center. Senior Amanda Johnson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) walked with one out to score in front of Nelson.

In the top of the seventh the Thunder tied the game with an unearned run. Lyndsey Pritchard reached on an error to open the frame and moved to second and third on infield ground outs before scoring on a single from Thornton.   After Augustana went out in the seventh, neither team scored in the eighth before Rehmert's homer ended the game, which took over two hours to complete.

Rehmert and Nelson each had two hits to lead a nine-hit Viking attack.

GAME 2 - Wheaton 4, Augustana 1

The Thunder erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 1-0 Augustana lead and ruin the chances for a crucial Viking sweep in league play.

Laura Behnke's (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) third inning solo home run had been the only score heading into the sixth. Wheaton loaded the bases with no outs against Augustana starter Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) and then Lyndsey Pritchard delivered a bases-clearing triple to make it 3-1. The Vikings made a pitching change at this time and reliever Christie Wiersema's (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) first delivery got away and Pritchard scored to make it 4-1.

Augustana loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh but Thunder pitcher Danielle Schmidt got Nelson for the final out of the contest.

Anderson gave up 12 hits in the game but didn't issue a walk and had five strikeouts to keep the Thunder off the board until the sixth. With the loss she is now 6-4 on the year.

The Viking offense collected eight hits off Schmidt with sophomore second baseman Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) getting three and Behnke and sophomore right fielder Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) picking up two apiece.
