Vikings win three events at Norse Relays

Senior Samantha Bazely took second in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump at the Norse Relays on Saturday, April 13 in Decorah, Iowa.

DECORAH, Iowa - The 10th ranked Augustana women's track & field team placed second at the Norse Relays on Saturday, October 13 in Decorah, Iowa. The Vikings won two individual events and a relay en route to piling up 116 points, trailing only the first place total of 167 put up by host Luther. Hamline (76), Carleton (71), Cornell (49), Ashford (38) and Coe (14) rounded out the team scoring in the seven-team meet.

Junior Taelar Hillyer (Rock Island Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) captured the pole vault with a leap of 10' 0". This was an event where the Vikings placed five individuals. Senior Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley HS, Gibson City, Ill.) took second at 9' 6 ¼" with freshman Danielle Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) taking third with the same height. Freshman Emalee Leigh (United Township HS, Hampton, Ill.) placed fifth at 9' 0 ¼" and freshman Catie Nelson (Geneseo HS, Annawan, Ill.) was sixth at 8' 0 ½".  

Junior Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) won the 400 hurdles in 1:04.07 and placed third in the 100 hurdles with a time of :15.76. Freshman Annie Martines (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) took second in the 400 hurdles (1:07.12) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (:16.62). Smith anchored the 1600 relay to a second place finish with a time of 4:09.51 and she was joined by Martines and fellow freshman Rachel Akmakjian (Poudre HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) and Stephanie Sorrentino (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.). Smith ran the third leg on the sixth place 400 relay that turned in a time of :53.24 and she was joined by Martines, Hillyer and sophomore Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.).  

The other winner for the Vikings on the cold day in Decorah came from the 4x1600 relay squad of sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), junior Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), sophomore Becca Sund (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) and senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) which ran 21:07.38.   The 1600 sprint medley quartet of Akmakjian, Sorrentino, freshman Anna Walsh (Mahtomedi HS, Mahtomedi, Minn.) and junior Kristyn Barton (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) took second in 4:32.33.  

Senior Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) placed second in the triple jump with a leap of 33' 8 ¾" while Moravek took third (33' 0 ½") and sophomore Laura Polizzi (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) was fifth at 32' 4 ¾". Moravek placed third in the long jump (16' 4 ½") while freshman Kayla Bushey (Luther North HS, Chicago, Ill.) was fifth (15' 9") and Bazely took sixth (15' 4").  

The 3200 relay of Bacon, Benge, senior Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Jones finished third in 9:37.23. The 800 relay of Akmakjian, Sorrentino, Bushey and Moravek placed fifth in 1:53.72.   Sophomore Emily Lutton (Elkhorn HS, Omaha, Neb.) cleared 4' 7 ¾" to finish fifth in the high jump and junior Lauren Schneiderbauer (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) was fifth in the javelin with a toss of 104' 9".  

The Vikings will host the Augustana Invitational on Friday, April 19 at Paul V. Olsen Track.
