Win by 3200 relay highlights first day effort

Junior Edgar Valle handled the second leg of the Vikings' winning 3200 relay in the first day of competition at the Lee Calhoun Memorial Invitational on Friday, April 12 in Macomb, Illinois.

MACOMB, Ill. - A victory in the 3200 relay was the top effort for the sixth ranked Augustana men's track & field team at the first day of competition in the Lee Calhoun Invitational on Friday, April 12 at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. There were nine events contested and the 3200 relay of sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), junior Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.), freshman Cale McCormick (Mahomet-Seymour HS, Mahomet, Ill.) and junior Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) turned in a winning time of 7:53.84.

Augustana, ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division III dual meet power rankings, finished the day in third place with 36 points. The Vikings trail only Western Illinois (52) and Iowa (49) in the 16 team field. Marquette (31), WIU Alumni (29), St. Ambrose (27), Lincoln College (23), DePaul (21), University of Illinois (19), and Northern Iowa (18) rounded out the top 10. Knox (12), Monmouth (11), Hawkeye Track Club (10), Adams State (8), Illinois State (6) and Culver-Stockton (4) rounded out the field.

The 800 relay team of senior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.), freshman Garrett Miner (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), sophomore Rob McNeil (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) and freshman Kyle Cluver (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, Ill.) sped to a third place finish in 1:33.88.

Freshman Ethan Koch (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) took fourth in the 10,000 with a time of 33:44.95. The 1600 sprint medley unit of Mays, Miner, senior Daniel Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) and junior Cody Sharko (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) took fifth in 3:44.76.

Sophomore Alec Seymour (Riverton HS, Riverton, Ill.) tossed the javelin 155' 9" for fifth place while senior Luke Anderson (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) was seventh at 154' 2" and senior Mike Anderson (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) was eighth with a mark of 149' 10". Senior Jacob O'Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) placed seventh with a jump of 20' 11 ¼".
