Vikings split at Millikin

Junior shortstop Krista Watson went three for six with a homer, a double, two runs scored and three driven in Sunday as Augustana split a doubleheader at Millikin. The Vikings rebounded from a 3-2 game one loss to take the nightcap 6-1.

DECATUR, Ill.-Playing its second doubleheader in as many days Sunday, Augustana bounced back from a tough 3-2 loss in the opener to salvage a split at Millikin. The Vikings defeated the Big Blue 6-1 in the nightcap to improve to 18-6 overall and 3-1 in the CCIW. Millikin is now 14-3 on the year and 3-1 in the league.

Game One - Millikin 3, Augustana 2

The hosts manufactured a run in the bottom of the seventh to take game one. Cora Jeffers drew a one-out walk from Augustana's Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) and stole second. She moved to third on a foul out to right and scored the winning run on Janet Ellis' infield single.

Trailing 2-0 after being stymied by Big Blue hurler Lauren Kitterman through five, the Vikings tied it in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove Soith HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) delivered a two-out single to right and junior Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) came through with her fourth home run of the season.

Millikin touched Hintz for a run each in the third and fourth innings to take the lead.

Hintz went the distance and took her third loss against eight wins. He allowed 10 hits, walked two and fanned six. Kitterman went the distance as well, limiting the Vikings to four hits. She got the win to improve to 9-1 this year.

Game Two - Augustana 6, Millikin 1

The Vikings staked starter Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) to a three-run lead in the bottom of the first in the nightcap. Designated as the home team for game two, Augustana got a leadoff double from sophomore Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.), a Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) single and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Watson to go up 1-0. Two passed balls and an RBI double by Lavin plated two more runs in the frame.

The Big Blue got all they would get off Anderson on Abbie Tinnon's leadoff homer in the second.

The Vikings added two runs in the bottom of the third, although they left the bases loaded in the inning. A Watson double, a walk to Jamie Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and a single by Lavin loaded the bases. An error allowed the fourth Augustana run to score and Anderson helped her own cause with a two-out RBI single to left and a 5-1 Viking lead.

Anderson also drove in her team's final run of the day with a groundout in the fifth.

The freshman southpaw went the distance for the win, improving to 6-1 on the year. She allowed four hits and issued one walk while fanning four. Lavin and Watson each had two of Augustana's seven hits in the game.

Coach Kris Kistler's club hosts a non-conference doubleheader against Central on Thursday, April 11. First pitch at Carver Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
