Augustana women second at Wartburg

Johanna Schnitzler's win in the heptathlon was one of three Augustana individual victories Saturday as the Vikings finished second at the Wartburg Select meet in Waverly, Iowa.

WAVERLY, Iowa-Senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren HS, Wadsworth, Ill.), junior Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) and sophomore Astin Moravek (Riverside Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) each picked up individual wins Saturday to lead Augustana to a second-place finish at the Wartburg Select. The top-ranked hosts won with 350.5 points, with Coach Fred Whiteside's Vikings next at 122.

Jones and freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) were first and second in the 5000, finishing in 17:27.69 and 17:36.73, respectively. Schnitzler and junior Julia Popp (Boylan Catholic HS, Belvidere, Ill.) did the same in the heptathlon, with respective totals of 2,990 and 2,528 points. Schnitzler finished first in six of the seven events, with Popp recording the top mark in the javelin. Moravek went 16' 10" to win the long jump and took third in the triple jump with a mark of 34' 7¼".  

In the 1500, junior Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) ran a second-place 5:01.00. Sophomore Lorrain Stamberger (La Moille HS, La Moille, Ill.) was third in 5:03.02 and sophomore Becca Sund (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) seventh in 5:06.57.  

Augustana also got second-place finishes by juniors Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) in the 400 hurdles (1:02.58) and Taelar Hillyer (Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) in the pole vault (11' 7¾"). Freshman Annie Martines (St. Charles HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was fourth behind Smith with a 1:07.63 and classmate Danielle Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) was seventh behind Hillyer, clearing 9' 8¼". The 4x800 relay team of junior Kristyn Barton (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), Benge, Stamberger and senior Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) also garnered a second-place finish with a time of 9:57.63.  

Vikings went three, four and five in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Senior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) finished in 12:34.00, followed by junior Amanda Pease (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and senior Theresa Coverick (Stagg HS, Palos Park, Ill.) in 12:37.16 and 12:44.98, respectively.  

Sophomore Laura Polizzi (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 33' 4 ½" and freshman Kayla Bushey (Luther North HS, Chicago) seventh in the long jump, going 16' 1".  

Augustana also got a seventh-place finish in the 4x100 relay. The freshman quartet of Anna Urbanczyk (Glenbrook North, Northbrook, Ill.), Rachel Akmakjian (Poudre HS, Fort Collins, Colo.), Stephanie Sorrentino (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and Bushey ran a :52.88.  

Akmakjian also ran a 1:02.41 to take eighth in the 400.  

After Wartburg and Augustana, rounding out the team standings were Grand View (93), Loras (84), Wisconsin-Stout (62.5), Dubuque (37) and Gustavus Adolphus (35).  

The Vikings are next in action at the Luther Norse Relays in Decorah, Iowa on Saturday, April 13.
