Vikings win seven events en route to Wartburg title
|Junior Chris Madison and sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo finished one-two in the 800 at the Wartburg Select meet on Saturday, April 6 in Waverly, Iowa. Madison won with a time of 1:55.54 while Dal Pozzo was second in 1:56.21. The Vikings won a total of seven events en route to taking the team title.|
WAVERLY, Iowa - Victories in five individual events and two relays helped Augustana secure a very close team victory at the Wartburg Select Invitational on Saturday, April 6 in Waverly, Iowa. The Vikings, ranked sixth in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, narrowly defeated 14th rated Wartburg to win the team title in the nine-team field.
Augustana, which scored in every event except the triple jump, finished the day with 205.5 points while the host Knights tallied 203 in second place. Grand View was third with 117 while Loras had 82.20 in fourth and Dubuque 52.2 in fifth. Wisconsin-Stout (50.90), Gustavus Adolphus (46.20), Peter Wagner (10) and Life Speed (8) rounded out the field.
Veteran head coach Paul Olsen's team was especially strong on the track, winning the 200, 400, 800, 1500 and both the 400 and 1600 relays. The lone field event win came in the pole vault.
Sophomore Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) won the 200 in :22.23 with junior Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.) taking sixth in :23.21 and sophomore Nowlan Savage (Arapahoe HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) grabbing eighth in :23.38. Graffagna also added a seventh in the 100 in :11.56.
Senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) led a one-two sweep in the 400 with a winning time of :49.12 while sophomore Antonio Owens (Naperville North HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) was second in :50.09. The Vikings went one-two in the 800 also with junior Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) winning in 1:55.54 and sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) taking second in 1:56.21.
In the 1500 it was yet another one-two finish for Augustana as senior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) won in 4:00.86 and freshman Keith Sands (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) took second in 4:01.94. Senior Jonathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) placed fifth in 4:05.72 and senior Dennis O'Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) grabbed eighth in 4:09.48.
The 400 relay team of Graffagna, Patton, Cline and senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) sprinted to victory with a time of :42.08. The 1600 relay unit of Cline, Owens, Patton and Rindone closed out the meet with a winning time of 3:17.54.
Senior Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) won the pole vault with a clearance of 14' 3 ¼" and freshman Remington Riccolo (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) placed seventh at 12' 9 ½". Sophomore Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) finished second in the 400 intermediate hurdles (:56.41) and fourth in the 110 high hurdles (:16.06). Freshman Travis Goodwin (Simi Valley HS, Simi Valley, Calif.) took fifth in the 400 intermediate hurdles in 1:00.13 and freshman Jeremy Lang (Rockford Christian HS, Stillman Valley, Ill.) was eighth (1:00.92) in the same event.
The Vikings placed four in the 3000 steeplechase with senior Tommy Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) leading the way in third with a time of 10:12.91. Junior Isaac Trostle (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) was fourth in 10:15.55 with junior Andrew Allabastro (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) taking fifth n 10:24.40. Junior Alex Stockwell (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was sixth in 10:28.49.
The 3200 relay team of junior Cody Sharko (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), senior Joe Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.), Szyman Ligas (Peru St. Bede Academy, Spring Valley, Ill.) and sophomore Matt Simo (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) took third in 8:18.19.
Senior Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) placed in three of the throwing events. He was third in the shot put (47' 9 ½"), fifth in the hammer throw (147' 6") and sixth in the discus (137' 5 ¼").
Freshman Caleb Ivey (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) went 22' 0 ¼" to take third in the long jump with senior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) placing fourth at 21' 9". Sophomore Kevin Gordy (Lincoln-Way West HS, Mokena, Ill.) finished seventh with a leap of 20' 11 ½".
Senior Luke Anderson (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) was fourth in the javelin with a toss of 167' 0 ¼" and senior Mike Anderson (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) took sixth with a mark of 154' 2 ½".
Freshman Ethan Koch (Prospect HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) finished fifth in the 5000 in 15:40.76. Junior Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) cleared 6' 0" to take sixth in the high jump.
Augustana will participate in the Western Illinois Invitational on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13 in Macomb, Illinois.
