BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Jamie Rehmert's (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) walk-off, two-run home run in the nightcap Saturday capped a big day for Coach Kris Kistler's Augustana softball team. The Vikings went on the road and swept third-ranked Illinois Wesleyan 5-3 and 6-5, winning both games with home runs in the final inning. Augustana improves to 17-5 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW, while the Titans drop to 14-5 on the year and 0-2 in the league.
Game One - Augustana 5, Illinois Wesleyan 3
The Vikings went to the top of the seventh inning of the opener trailing 2-1. Rehmert drew a one-out walk and Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) gave the Vikings the lead with a home run to left center. Augustana then gave starter Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) a couple of insurance runs when Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) reached on an error and Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) followed with another two-run homer to put the visitors up 5-2.
In the bottom of the frame, the Titans loaded the bases with one out, but Hintz got out of it, giving up just one unearned run to secure the win.
Augustana took an early 1-0 lead on Krista Watson's (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) lead-off homer in the second, but IWU came back with two runs in the bottom of the third on a Keri Leach two-run blast.
Hintz went the distance, scattering nine hits to improve to 8-2 on the year. She walked two and fanned three. Molly McCready suffered just her second loss against six wins this season.
Game Two - Augustana 6, Illinois Wesleyan 5
The nightcap was a see-saw affair with Augustana, the designated home team, twice taking one run leads. The first came on Watson's first-inning sacrifice fly and the second when Tambling delivered a solo homer in the second. Each time, the Titans responded with a run in the next half inning to tie it. IWU then hit the Vikings with a three-spot in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jenna Teson (Jacobs S, Algonquin, Ill.), Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Watson had consecutive one-out singles to load the bases. Rehmert and Tambling followed by driving in a run each with singles of their own. Alyssa Vorel retired the final two batters of the inning, leaving the bags full of Vikings and clinging to a 5-4 lead.
After Wiersema relieved starter Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) and retired IWU without incident in the sixth and seventh innings, the Vikings came up for the final time. Watson led off with a double to right center, knocking Vorel out of the game. Rehmert then greeted reliever Jenna Noland with a two-run shot down the left field line to end the game.
Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.), Watson, Rehmert and Tambling each had two hits in the nightcap. Rehmert drove in three runs and Tambling a pair. Wiersema got the win in relief to improve to 3-1 this year.
The Vikings, winners of six in a row, come right back on Sunday, April 7, facing Millikin in a doubleheader in Decatur, Illinois. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
