Vikings split at North Central
|Sophomore outfielder Danny Fifer went six for 10 with four runs scored and five driven in Tuesday as Augustana earned a doubleheader split at North Central.|
NAPERVILLE, Ill.- Augustana rapped out 14 hits and senior right-hander Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) had a fine outing in an 11-2 game one win as the 23-ranked Vikings earned a doubleheader split at North Central Tuesday. North Central fought off a furious Augustana rally in the nightcap, winning 8-7. The Vikings are now 14-4 overall and 2-2 in the CCIW, while the Cardinals are 10-8 and 3-2 in the league.
Game One - Augustana 11, North Central 2
The Vikings got another stellar mound performance in the opener as Heaton allowed just two runs and five hits in eight innings of work. He fanned 10 and walked just one and improved to 3-1 on the year. Sophomore Kevin Hodgman (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) finished things off, throwing a scoreless ninth.
The offense gave Heaton five runs in the first two innings. A pair of Cardinal errors helped the Vikings score two in the first. Sophomore Jacques Camalick (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) drove in a run with a single.
Sophomores Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) were hit by pitches to start the second and both moved up on an Andrew Houser wild pitch. One out later, sophomore Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) drove them in with a single to left and senior Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) followed with a double to left, scoring Fifer to make it 5-0.
North Central got to Heaton for a run in the bottom of the third. Schmidt drove in another run with a single in the fourth, although the Vikings left the bases loaded.
Augustana added three more runs in the fifth to make it 9-1. Lenihan doubled in two runs and Fifer plated him with a single. The Cardinals got their final run in the bottom of the frame. The Vikings scored a run in the seventh when Lenihan singled and later scored on a wild pitch and another in the eighth on an RBI double by Camalick.
Fifer finished three for five with two runs scored and three driven in. Schmidt was three for four, scoring once and driving in a pair. Lenihan (two for four, three runs, two RBI) and Camalick (two for five, two RBI) each had multi-hit games as well.
Game Two - North Central 8, Augustana 7
An Augustana comeback fell just short in the nightcap. Trailing, 6-0 after five, the Vikings scored two runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and four in the eighth, but came up a run shy. The Cardinals were able to stay just out of reach, plating a run each in the sixth and seventh innings. Fifer and Schmidt each had two-run singles in the four-run eighth.
The Cardinals hurt Augustana starter Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) with the long ball. Nick Daniels touched the freshman right-hander for a grand slam in the bottom of the first. Daniels' shot was preceded up by a walk, hit batter and an error. John Ciolkosz added a solo blast leading off the third.
In the fifth, Ciolkosz led off with a triple against freshman reliever Darwin Townsend (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0.
The Vikings got to North Central stater Connor Brown for two in the sixth. Fifer reached on an error to start the inning and scored the first Augustana run on David Balzer's (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) pinch-hit triple. The next batter, Camalick delivered Balzer with a single to right.
Fifer matched his three-for-five game one performance in the nightcap, scoring twice and driving in a pair. Junior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) added two hits and Schmidt had three RBI. White suffered his first loss after two wins.
Augustana hosts a three-game set with Carthage this weekend. The teams play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field on Saturday, April 6 and play a single game Sunday at noon, also in Moline.
