Jones and Smith break own school records

Senior Sarahbeth Jones broke her own school record in the 3000 with a time of 9:53.85 on Thursday, March 28 at the Augustana Easter Open.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill.- Senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) and junior Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) each set school records Thursday at Augustana's Easter Open at Ericson Field. Jones broke her own record in the 3000 with a winning 9:53.85 and Smith took down her own 400-meter hurdle standard, winning in 1:02.42.

The Vikings finished third in the team standings. Wartburg won with 235 points while St. Ambrose was second with 214 and Augustana had 199.83. Clarke (74.83), Ashford (58), Buena Vista (45) and Concordia-Chicago (23.33) rounded out the field.  

Sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) also bettered Jones' previous 3000 record by more than two seconds, finishing second in 9:56.69. Sophomore Lizzie Lundine (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.) was seventh in 10:55.65. Lundine was also fourth in the 1500 in 5:06.43.  

Another notable performance came from pole vaulter Taelar Hillyer (Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), who surpassed last year's NCAA qualifying standard with a leap of 12' ¾". Senior Taylor Tjardes (Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley SH, Gibson City, Ill.) and freshman Danielle Engel (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) each cleared 9' 7 ¼" to tie for fourth and frosh Emalee Leigh (United Township HS, Hampton, Ill.) went 8' 7½" for eighth place.  

Coach Fred Whiteside also got winning performances from juniors Lauren Schneiderbauer (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) in the javelin (116' 2") and Kristen Whiteside (Zion Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) in the 200-meter steeplechase (7:46.63). Senior Annie Heifner (Oregon HS, Oregon, Wis.) and junior Amanda Pease (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) were second and fourth, respectively, in the steeplechase, finishing in 7:48.87 and 8:07.54.  

The Viking 4x400 relay won as well. Freshman Stephanie Sorrentino (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), Smith, junior Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and freshman Annie Martines (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) finished in 4:07.35.  

Sorrentino was busy all day as she took third in the 200 in :28.12 and eighth in the 100 in :13.67. She also added a leg on the third place 400 relay which ran :52.34.  

Smith (:15.33) and Martines (:16.62) were second and sixth in the 100 hurdles. Martines (1:05.94) also finished third behind Smith in the 400 hurdles. Augustana also got second-place finishes from juniors Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) in the hammer (148' 11") and Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) in the high jump (4' 11¾"). Haley Jones was eighth in the high jump with a leap of 4' 6" and Beauchamp added a seventh-place finish in the shot (36' 3").  

The 400 relay team of freshman Rachel Akmakjian (Poudre HS, Fort Collins, Colo.), freshman Annie Urbanczyk (Glenbrook North HS, Northbrook, Ill.), Sorrentino and freshman Kayla Bushey (Luther North HS, Chicago, Ill.) took third in :52.34. Akmakjian was third in the 400 in 1:02.22 and Bushey placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 15' 7" and sixth in the 100 in :13.49. She also added an eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 32' 0 ¾".  

Senior Samantha Bazely (Rock Island Alleman HS, Coal Valley, Ill.) took third in the triple jump (33' 10 ¼") and fifth in the long jump (15' 3 ½"). Sophomore Laura Polizzi (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) placed sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 32' 3 ¾". Junior Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was eighth in the 800 in 2:19.07. Junior Kelsey Moon (Mundelein HS, Wauconda, Ill.) took eighth in the 200 in :29.52.
