ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana won a pair of games in the first round of the Augustana Invitational on Friday, March 29 and the victories were polar opposites of one another. The Vikings, now 13-5 on the season, defeated Ripon 11-0 in a game shortened to five innings in the opener. In the second game, Augustana battled back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat 16th ranked Coe 4-3 on Krista Watson's (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) two out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Vikings have won five of their last six games and will play Wisconsin-LaCrosse and Wartburg tomorrow on Saturday, March 30. This tournament was supposed to be held at Green Valley Softball Complex in Moline, Illinois but the diamonds were not playable so it was moved to the Augustana field behind the Carver Center.
Watson's single in seventh give Vikings come-from-behind victory over 16th ranked Coe
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Junior Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) delivered a clutch single with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Augustana to a 4-3 victory over 16th ranked Coe. Watson's hit, her only one of the game, capped a dramatic comeback for head coach Kris Kistler's crew.
The Kohawks seemed to have the game in control, leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Augustana had managed just three hits off Coe starter Maddison Woodruff up to that point. The Kohawks scored a single run in the first off Viking ace Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) when catcher Abby Flannagan laced a ringing double to left-center to score Callie Morningstar, who had walked with one out.
In the fourth the Kohawks added two more on a single by right fielder Anna Corkery with two outs that brought home Gretchen Lilienthal and Amanda Hovind.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the sixth, freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) got things started for the home team with a single. Sophomore Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) walked and sophomore Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Sophomore Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) coaxed a walk out of Woodruff to plate Burnett with the Vikings' first run. Watson was then retired on an infield fly ball but the ball was dropped and Behnke tried to score on the play and was thrown out for the second out of the inning. Junior Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) smoked a single to left to score Teson from second to make it 3-2.
Trailing 3-2, Hintz gave up a double to Brianna Hall with two outs in the top of the seventh and the next bat, Callie Morningstar, ripped a line drive that Watson snared for the third out of the inning.
That gave the Vikings hope heading into the bottom of the seventh. With one out junior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) singled off Woodruff and Burnett snuck a single down the right field line, just over first base and Tambling motored to third. Behnke then executed a perfect bunt and Tambling just beat the tag at home to tie the game. On the play Burnett scampered to third and Behnke made her way to second. Woodruff issued an intentional walk to Teson to load the bases with one out. Coe made a pitching change and brought in Mackenzie Laux for Woodruff and she struck out Lavin for the second out of the inning. That left it up to Watson and she delivered with a single to right field to score Burnett with the winning run.
Hintz picked up the victory to move to 6-2 on the year. She gave up seven hits while striking out three and walking two.
Vikings moved to 12-5 with 11-0 win over Ripon
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Sophomore Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) continued her hot hitting, going three for three, and senior Amanda Johnson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) hit her first career home run, a fourth-inning grand slam, as Augustana defeated Ripon 11-0 at the Augustana Invitational Friday. Freshman southpaw Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) fired a two-hit shutout as the Vikings improved to 12-5 on the year.
Augustana scored in each of the first four innings. Behnke led off the top of the first with a bunt single and came around to score along with sophomore Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) - who had walked - on Jamie Rehmert's (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) two-out, two-run single to right.
Freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.), Behnke and sophomore Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) loaded the bases with consecutive one-out singles in the second and Burnette scored on a Lavin groundout to put Augustana up 3-0.
A two-out Ripon error in the top of the third sparked a four-run inning for the Vikings. After Johnson reached on the miscue, sophomore Jaclyn Wrona (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) doubled her to third and both scored when Burnett reached on another error. Behnke delivered Burnett with a double and Teson drove in Behnke with a single for a 7-0 lead.
Johnson's grand slam in the fourth completed the scoring.
Meanwhile, Anderson allowed just three base runners in the contest. She hit Cassie Bilotto leading off the second, but catcher Wrona helped her out by picking Bilotto off first to end the inning. Jordan Hester and Karisa Simonsen had singles in the third and fourth innings, respectively. Anderson went the full five innings, fanning five, to improve to 4-1 on the year.
