AUGUSTANA 10, ST. AMBROSE 2 - Game 1
Junior Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) led a power surge as Augustana clubbed four home runs in a 10-2 victory over St. Ambrose in the first game of a non-conference double header. Rehmert got started early as she lined a two-out offering from Queen Bee starter Jenna Harshbarger in the first inning over the right field fence for a three run blast. After two were out, sophomore Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) singled and went to second on a single by junior Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.). Lavin and Watson then came home on Rehmert's first home run of the game.
With the score 3-0, the Vikings went back to work in the bottom of the second and broke the game open. Junior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) singled and gave way to pinch runner Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.). Sophomore Jaclyn Wrona (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) homered to left field to make it 5-0. Freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) then singled and sophomore Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) homered to right field to bump the margin to 7-0. Sophomore Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) singled and Lavin walked before Rehmert belted her second home run of the game to make the score 10-0.
St. Ambrose added two runs in the top of the fourth off Augustana starter Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) when Sam Saladino singled in a pair. Hintz went the distance in the contest, which was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run margin. She struck out nine and scattered five hits without walking anybody. Her record is now 5-2 on the year.
The Vikings smacked nine hits against three Queen Bee hurlers with Rehmert leading the way with her two home runs and six RBI.
ST. AMBROSE 7, AUGUSTANA 5 - Game 2
The Queen Bees battled back from deficits of 3-0 after three and 4-1 after four and erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh to secure the victory. Augustana put three runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning to break open a scoreless contest. After one out, sophomore Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) walked and freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) singled. Sophomore Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) singled home Wiersema and pushed Burnett to third. A single off the bat of sophomore Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) plated Burnett and moved Behnke to third. Behnke came home on a single by sophomore Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.).
St. Ambrose scored a single run in the top of the fourth but Augustana answered with one in the bottom of the inning. Junior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) reached on an error with one out and freshman Lisa Bartha (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) pinch ran for her. She was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Wiersema but Burnett's ringing double scored Wiersema.
Augustana starter Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) ran into trouble in the fifth and gave up a run before being replaced by junior Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.). Rehmert allowed a single run in the sixth and went into the seventh clinging to a 4-3 lead. The Queen Bees erupted for four runs in the top of the frame with a three run home run off the bat of Samantha Saladino providing the big blow.
The Vikings got a home run from Behnke to lead off the seventh and a two out double from junior Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) but St. Ambrose reliever Kathryn Brown shut the door on the rally and collected the victory. Rehmert took the loss for Augustana and is now 1-1. Behnke, Lavin and Burnett all had two hits for the Vikings.
