Renowned flutist, composer to visit the Quad Cities

Flutist and composer Phyllis Louke will visit the Quad Cities April 19 and 20 for a concert and two workshops.

An active chamber musician in Portland, Ore., Louke is an Altus Artist who serves as music director of the Rose City Flute Choir and principal flutist with Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and Oregon Symphonic Band. She maintains a large private flute studio and is also sought after as a clinician and adjudicator.

Louke has been a performer, clinician, and guest conductor at the National Flute Association's annual convention, as well as at flute events throughout the United States. An internationally known composer, with over 40 pieces published, she specializes in flute choir and educational music.

"We are very fortunate to have Phyllis Louke visit the Quad Cities. I know the audiences will learn a great deal and enjoy themselves at these events," said Janet Stodd,  the Augustana music faculty member who coordinated the events as founder and artistic director of Quad City Flutes Unlimited.

April 19, 2 p.m., St. Ambrose University: Louke will present a workshop with several of her pieces to be performed by St. Ambrose students in Madsen Hall, at the end of the west corridor of the Galvin Fine Arts Building.

April 19, 7:30 p.m., St. Ambrose University: Louke will be the featured guest at the 30th anniversary Quad City Flutes Unlimited Concert in the Rogalski Center Ballroom. The performance will include the premiere of Fanfare and Celebration, a piece commissioned for this concert.  She also will conduct several of her works and perform contrabass flute.

April 20, 10 a.m., Augustana College: Louke will present a workshop on her compositions in Wallenberg Hall, Denkmann Memorial Building. This performance will include three of her flute choir pieces and a quartet performed by Augustana students.              

All events are free and open to the public and are jointly sponsored by Augustana College, St. Ambrose University, Quad City Flutes Unlimited, the Bettendorf Rotary and Altus Flutes.
