Hosts win team title at Viking Olympics

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Luke Anderson's (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) 176' 8" javelin throw was one of 10 winning efforts for Augustana Saturday, helping the hosts easily outdistance the rest of a 10-team field at the Viking Olympics. Augustana finished with 283.5 points, nearly doubling the total of second-place St. Ambrose (143). Aurora was third with 107 points.
Senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) picked an individual win in the 100 (:10.84) and anchored the winning 4x100 (:42.26) and 4x400 (3:21.25) relays. He was joined in the 400 relay by sophomore David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.), senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.). Cline also ran the third leg of the 1600 relay with sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and junior Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) handling the first two.
Sophomore David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) was a double individual winner. He ran a meet-record :52.82 in the 400 hurdles and a personal-best :15.19 in the 110 hurdles. Dal Pozzo (1:54.35) and Patton (:22.28) won the 800 and 200, respectively. Other Viking winners included the 4x800 relay team of sophomore Alex Odenkirk (Ironwood Ridge, Tucson, Ariz.), seniors Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) and Dennis O'Flaherty (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and freshman Dan Popek (Minooka HS, Minooka, Ill.), which finished in 8:13.60; and Caleb Ivey (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.), who went 21' 6¼" in the long jump.
Augustana showed great depth as well. Cline (:10.91), Devore (:11.14) and junior Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, La Fox, Ill.) (:11.31) finished second, fifth and eighth, respectively, behind Rindone in the 100. In the 800, Madison (1:54.53) and junior Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) (1:56.99) were third and fourth behind Voland, while Justin Smith (1:58.83), freshman Cale McCormick (Mahomet-Seymour HS, Mahomet, Ill.) (1:58.90) and O'Flaherty (1:59.44) were sixth through eighth. Freshmen Travis Goodwin (Simi Valley HS, Simi Valley, Calif.) and Jeremy Lang (Rockford Christian HS, Stillman Valley, Ill.) and sophomore Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Ill.) were fourth, sixth and eight behind Voland in the 400 hurdles, running :58.45, :1:01.84 and 1:04.10, respectively.
Behind Luke Anderson in the javelin, it was sophomore Alec Seymour (Riverton HS, Riverton, Ill.) and senior Mike Anderson (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) finishing fourth (149' 9") and fifth (147' 2") and senior Kyle Williams (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) and junior Steve Hapanovich (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) taking seventh (142' 10") and eighth (142' 6"). Senior Jacob O'Rourke (Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) went 21' 0" in the long jump, finishing fourth behind Ivey and sophomore Antonio Owens (Naperville North HS, Chicago, Ill.) (:22.91) was seventh behind Patton in the 200.
Freshman Keith Sands (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) finished second with a 4:01.06 mile, while Odenkirk's 4:02.57 was third. Senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) ran a fifth-place 4:05.84 and sophomore Keegan Buttimer (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) was sixth in 4:05.86. In the 3000, Jonathan Smith finished second in 8:52.76, with freshman Ethan Koch (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.), senior Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) and sophomore Grant Bell (Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa HS, Belgrade, Minn.) were fourth (8:59.32), sixth (9:07.35) and eighth (9:12.67), respectively. Sophomore Andrew Lulis (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) took second in the pole vault, clearing 14' 9", while senior Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) was fourth (14' 3¼"), sophomore Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) sixth (13' 9¼") and senior Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) eighth (13' 3½").
Junior Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) was third in the 400 with a time of :51.92. In the discus, sophomore Jacob Benner (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) threw 134' 5" for seventh, three inches better than teammate Kevin Macek (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.), who was eighth. Macek, a senior, was also eighth in the hammer throw, with a heave of 137' 0".
