McIntosh, Davis shutout UW-Platteville

Senior Jared McIntosh threw a complete-game shutout to lead Augustana to a 5-0 win over UW-Platteville Saturday in the opener of a doubleheader against UW-Platteville. The 21st-ranked Vikings won the nightcap at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field as well, 1-0.

MOLINE, Ill. -Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) and Seth Davis (Mullen HS, Aurora, Colo.) each threw a complete game shutout Saturday as Augustana opened the home portion of its 2013 schedule with a 5-0, 1-0 doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin-Platteville at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The 21st-ranked Vikings improve to 12-2 this season, while the Pioneers fall to 5-5.

Game One - Augustana 5, UW-Platteville 0

Augustana turned four double plays behind McIntosh in the opener, as the senior right-hander scattered five singles in going the full seven innings. He walked three and fanned three to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Jacob Van Duyne's (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) leadoff single got the Vikings started in the bottom of the first. After a walk to senior Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.), senior Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Senior Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) delivered VanDuyne with a sacrifice fly to center and senior Mark VanNatta (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) singled through the right side, plating Juhl for a 2-0 Viking lead.

The hosts added two more in the fourth. Sophomores Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.), Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West, New Lenox, Ill.) and Nicholas Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) had consecutive one-out singles, with Tenerelli's knocking in Lenihan. McIntosh's fielder's choice brought Fifer in with Augustana's fourth run. The Pioneers avoided more damage when left fielder Bobby Bean made a diving grab of Schmidt's bases-loaded line drive to end the inning.

The Vikings tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Fifer led off with a single, moved to second on a Tenerelli sacrifice and came around to score on Van Duyne's third hit of the game.

Game Two - Augustana 1, UW-Platteville 0

Davis spun his second consecutive complete game shutout in the nightcap. After allowing a single in each of the first two innings, the sophomore lefty held the Pioneers hitless over the final five frames, finishing with no walks and nine strikeouts.  He improved to 3-0 on the year.

For five innings, UW-Platteville starter Adam Theis matched Davis' goose eggs, but Augustana finally got on the board in the sixth. Van Duyne drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a Juhl ground out. Schmidt followed with a single to left, scoring Van Duyne with the game's only run.

Davis closed things out in the seventh, striking out Platteville's Topher Scheeler looking to end the game.

Schmidt went two-for-two as Theis limited the Vikings to just three hits in  the contest.

Augustana begins CCIW play on Friday, March 29, opening a three-game series against Elmhurst with a doubleheader at Swanson/Brunner. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
