WVIK to add second broadcast of “The Cities”
March 22, 2013
WVIK Augustana Public Radio will be adding a second broadcast of “The Cities” to air each Saturday at noon, beginning April 6. This will be in addition to the show’s weekly Friday evening slot.
Hosted by Jim Mertens, local T.V. news anchor, “The Cities” focuses on the issues facing communities in and around the Quad Cities, featuring regional and other guests. The program also features an “Out and About” segment to highlight regional events, exhibits and other activities happening in the Quad-Cities region.
“The Parent Trip,” Anna Kronenberger’s account of raising a family, held WVIK’s Saturday afternoon slot for 20 months. After the program ended in December 2012, “Inside Europe,” which explores the topical issues that shape Europe, took over the slot. By replacing “Inside Europe” with a second broadcast of “The Cities,” WVIK General Manager Jay Pearce hopes to extend the discussion of local issues that goes on during Don Wooten’s program “Saturday Morning Live!” Wooten’s show runs from 10 a.m. until noon.
“One of the things I always say is that when you listen to WVIK, you should hear the community. ‘The Cities’ fits right in with this,” said Pearce. “By partnering with WQPT to air ‘The Cities’ on radio, we can expand on the local coverage we already provide through our local news, ‘Midwest Week,’ community calendar, ‘Saturday Morning Live!,’ local music hosts, ‘Rock Island Lines’ and ‘RiverWay Stories.’”
“Inside Europe” will still be heard on WVIK on Mondays at 7 p.m.
