ST. LOUIS, Mo, - The Augustana softball team dropped both ends of a twin bill Saturday at Fontbonne. The Griffins took the first game 4-2 despite a pair of RBI by Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and came back to take the nightcap 9-1. The Vikings are now 8-4 on the year. Fontbonne evened its record at 4-4.
Game One - Fontbonne 4, Augustana 2
Augustana looked to be in good shape in the opener, with a 2-0 lead going to the bottom of the sixth and ace Sarah Hintz (Le Roy HS, Le Roy, Ill.) in the circle. However, the Griffins load the bases with three singles and right fielder Jessica Pratt delivered a two-out grand slam to put the hosts up 4-2.
The Vikings didn't go quietly, getting a leadoff single from senior Amanda Johnson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and a walk to sophomore Jaclyn Wrona (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) to start the seventh inning. Junior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) drew a one-out walk to load the bases, but junior Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) lined into an unassisted double play at third to end the game.
Augustana had taken the lead in the top of the sixth on Lavin's two-run double to right, which scored freshman Lisa Bartha (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and sophomore Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.).
Hintz took the loss, falling to 3-2 on the year.
Game Two - Fontbonne 9, Augustana 1
Behnke led off the nightcap with a triple to right center and scored on Jenna Teson's (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) single to center to put the Vikings up 1-0. However, they left the bases loaded and Fontbonne took advantage, scoring six in the bottom of the frame.
The Griffins knocked starter Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) from the game before she could record an out. A two-run single to center by Emily Smith off Viking reliever Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) capped the inning.
Fontbonne added a run in the second and two in the fourth, while Augustana never again mounted a serious threat. The Vikings left one runner stranded in each of the final four innings.
Teson had two of Augustana's four hits in the game. Wiersema fell to 2-1 with the loss.
