Augustana falls to Webster 9-4

Sophomore outfielder Danny Fifer was one of five Vikings with two hits Saturday, but 25th-ranked Augustana fell 9-4 to Webster in Winter Haven, Florida.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla.-Webster roughed up an Augustana pitching staff that entered the contest with a 1.93 ERA Saturday, defeating the Vikings 9-4 in Florida. The Gorloks improve to 7-5 on the season, while 25th-ranked Augustana falls to 9-2. Five Vikings, including sophomore Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.), rapped out two hits each.

Webster used an error and a passed ball to score a pair of unearned runs off senior right-hander Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) in the first and parlayed Alex Kazmierski's leadoff double into another run in the second. The Gorloks extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth, courtesy of RBI singles from Joe Winckel and Jared Turner and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Corey Laskey.

After stranding seven runners in the first four innings, the Vikings finally dented the scoreboard in the sixth, cutting the deficit in half with three runs. Freshman Michael Baugh (Sherrard HS, Matherville, Ill.) drew a two-out walk ahead of four consecutive singles by sophomore Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), Fifer, junior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) and senior Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.). The latter three hits each drove in a run and Juhl's knocked Gorlok starter Isaac Behm from the game.

Freshman right-hander Darwin Townsend (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) had held Webster scoreless since relieving McIntosh in the fourth, but the Gorloks got to him for two runs, one of which was unearned, in the seventh to extend the lead back to 8-3.

In the eighth, Webster scored a run on a double steal and the Vikings got one in the bottom half on singles by Tenerelli, Fifer and Van Duyne and an RBI groundout by Juhl.

McIntosh suffered his first loss in three decisions this season. Van Duyne, Juhl, Tenerelli, Fifer and senior Mark VanNatta (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) each had a pair of hits to pace the Augustana offense. Tenerelli scored twice and Juhl drove in two.

The Vikings wrap up play in Florida with a 9:00 a.m. contest against Anderson on Sunday, March 17.
