Vikings finish indoor season ranked 19th in the nation; win two invitationals; break three school records; Sarahbeth Jones a CCIW champion; Taelar Hillyer a national qualifier
Senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) won her second straight CCIW 3000-meter championship this year and set a school record of 10:14.66 in the same event at Olivet Nazarene. Jones' school-record performance was one of three during the 2013 indoor season for Coach Fred Whiteside's Vikings. In addition, junior Taelar Hillyer (Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) qualified for nationals in the pole vault and Augustana finished the year ranked 19th in the nation by the USTFCCCA.
Jones teamed with sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), junior Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and senior Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) to break Augustana's 4x800 relay record, running a 9:31.21, also at Olivet Nazarene. Junior Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) recorded the other new school standard with a 53' 11¾" in the weight throw at the Augustana Invitational.
Hillyer qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships in Naperville, Illinois with a season-best vault of 12' 2½" at the Augustana Invitational. She finished tied for 13th at nationals with a leap of 11' 3¾".
Jones and junior sprinter/hurdler Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Ill.) shared team track MVP honors, while Beauchamp and Hillyer were MVP's for the field events.
Whiteside's squad opened the season with a win at the University of Dubuque's five-team Sol Butler Invitational on January 12. Jones and Hillyer won the 3000 and pole vault, respectively, and Benge (600), Kirstillyn Pohlman, (Zion-Benton HS, Winthrop Harbor, Ill.) (1000) and Astin Moravek (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.) (long jump) picked up wins as well.
On January 19, the Vikings won eight individual events and one relay at Monmouth College's Midwest Invitational, although no team scores were kept.
They followed that up a week later with a third-place performance among eight teams at Olivet Nazarene. In addition to the school-record efforts by Jones' and the 3200 relay team, Smith won the 400 and Hillyer the pole vault.
Augustana finished fifth of eight teams at the loaded Warhawk Invitation in Whitewater, Wisconsin of February 2 and was third at the 10-team Grinnell Invitational a week later. Jones picked up a win in the mile at Whitewater. At Grinnell, sophomore Lizzy Lundine (Willowbrook HS, Villa Park, Ill.), this year's winner of Augustana's "Susan Wall Most Improved" award, won the 5000. Bacon, freshman Ashley Jensen-Anderson (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), junior Kelsey Stockert (Peoria Notre Dame HS, Mapleton, Ill.) and Benge were winners in the distance medley relay.
Beauchamp's record weight throw and Hillyer's NCAA-qualifying effort in the pole vault highlighted a Viking win at the four-team Augustana Invitational on Valentine's Day. Benge was a triple winner for the hosts, claiming the 600 and 1000 meters and teaming with Smith and freshmen Rachel Akmakjian (Poudre HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) and Annie Martines (St. Charles East HS), the team's Most Valuable Freshman, for a win in the 4x400 relay. In addition, Akmakjian won the 400, Smith the 200 and Bacon won the 3000 and joined sophomore Lorraine Stamberger (La Moille HS, La Moille, Ill.), Prazak and junior Kristyn Barton (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) on the winning 4x800 relay team.
Jones' win in the 3000 (a meet-record 10:16.92) paced the Vikings to a fifth-place finish in the team standings at the CCIW Championships. That competition was held February 22-23 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Smith was Augustana's final individual winner this year, running a 1:00.14 to claim first place in the 400 at Carthage's Last Chance Qualifier on March 1.
