A 7-1 start to the 2013 season has moved Coach Greg Wallace's Augustana baseball team into the D3baseball.com Top 25. After receiving votes in weeks one and two, the Vikings debut this week at number 25. Cortland State, also 7-1, sits atop this week's poll, receiving 10 of 25 first-place votes.
Augustana won seven of eight games during its first spring trip to Florida and returns to the Sunshine State this week for four games beginning with a doubleheader against Greenville on Friday, March 15. The Vikings will take on Webster, who is receiving votes in the poll, on Saturday, March 16 and Anderson on St. Patrick's Day before returning to the Midwest.
Augustana's pitching staff has compiled a 2.31 ERA and held opponents to a .207 batting average through its first eight games. Senior right-hander Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) has led the way, winning both of his starts and posting a 1.20 ERA. Junior outfielder Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) has paced the offense thus far, with a team-best .472 batting average. He also leads the Vikings in hits (17), runs (12), doubles (four) and stolen bases (perfect in six tries).
