Geography -- Suggested databases and websites

EBSCO Databases for Geography

This link will take you to a short list of EBSCO databases appropriate for research on Geography topics. Resources include Academic Search Complete, Business Source Elite, EconLit, Environment Complete, General Science Abstracts, GeoRef, GreenFILE, Newspaper Source and Political Science Complete. Because Geography is such a multi-disciplinary field, the short description of each database will allow you to modify the set to search only those most suitable to your research.

CQ Researcher

Provides original, comprehensive reporting and analysis on issues in the news. CQ Researcher offers in-depth, non-biased coverage of political and social issues, with regular reports on topics in health, international affairs, education, the environment, technology, and the U.S. economy.

FRANCIS

FRANCIS is a multilingual, multidisciplinary database covering the humanities and social sciences, including archaeology, geography, linguistics, philosophy, religion, and sociology.

JSTOR Journal Archive

Stores over one thousand scholarly journals in full-text format from the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. Journals can be searched by title or subject, individually or in groups. For each journal, articles from the first volume through to two to five years before today's date are available.

LexisNexis Academic Universe

Provides access to current information in law and business, and to the full text of major newspapers from around the world. LexisNexis also includes publications in other languages.

Census.gov

An internet resource that acts as a gateway to statistical information collected by the Census bureau and other government agencies. Includes national, state, county and metropolitan information on housing, employment, and social demographics.

CyberDrive Illinois

The web portal for the Illinois State Government. It includes links to over 20,000 web pages published by the various agencies of the Illinois State Government.

USA.gov

A web portal for the United States Federal Government. FirstGov is intended to be the first resource to find any government information on the Internet, with topics ranging from business and economy to money and benefits to science and technology.

Loring Map Library

The Loring Map Library is held in two locations on the Augustana Campus, in the Thomas Tredway Library and Swenson Hall of Geosciences. The collection includes over 100,000 printed U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps at 1:100,000, 1:62,500 and 1:24,000 scales, relief maps, atlases, and much more. The Tredway Library portion of the collection has been moved to the north end on the first floor and is available for checkout.

Sanborn Maps, 1867-1970

This resource provides access to large-scale maps of Illinois towns and cities. Users can manipulate the maps, magnify and zoom in on specific sections, and layer maps from different years. Other features shown include pipelines, railroads, wells, dumps, and heavy machinery.

Social Explorer

Social Explorer provides quick and easy access to current and historical census data from 1790 to 2010 and a wide variety of demographic information. The easy-to-use web interface lets users create maps and reports to illustrate, analyze, and understand demography and social change. To get started, click on the "Take a Tour" link and read through all the options for data retrieval and manipulation possible. At the end of the tour is the link to getting into the database. It will ask you to create an account, but this only takes a minute.

JSTOR Journal Archive

JSTOR includes full-text, pdf format journals covering all aspects of the sciences. For each journal, articles from the first volume through to two to five years before today's date are available.

ScienceDirect COLLEGE EDITION

There are two Science Direct College Edition databases. The Physical Sciences and Health and Life Sciences sets are comprised of 1500 journals with full text access beginning in 1995 through the current edition. Both databases are searched simultaneously. To see only the full text articles, change All Journals to Subscribed Journals in the Source search box.

United States Geological Survey

The USGS is a science organization that provides impartial information on the health of our ecosystems and environment, natural hazards, natural resources, the impacts of climate and land-use change, and core science systems. Use the Search USGS box and then choose Publications Warehouse. Both basic and advanced search options are available to access all their publications, thousands of which are in full text.

To access maps in USGS, click the left hand tab titled Maps, Imagery and Publications. The first link takes you to downloadable topographic maps; other options are listed below.

The Land Institute

The Land Institute has worked for over 30 years on the problem of agriculture. Our purpose is to develop an agricultural system with the ecological stability of the prairie and a grain yield comparable to that from annual crops.

Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture

The Leopold Center is a research and education center on the campus of Iowa State University created to identify and reduce negative environmental and social impacts of farming and develop new ways to farm profitably while conserving natural resources.

The Center's work is focused in four initiatives - ecology, marketing and food systems, policy and cross-cutting (water, energy, soil and alternative farming systems.

National Environmental Publications Internet Site (NEPIS)

NEPIS offers over 9000 full text, online documents of the United States Environmental Protection Agency dating back to early 1970s.
