Augustana Splits On Second Day Of Florida Trip

Freshman Ashley Anderson spun a one-hit gem in the second game Monday to lift Augustana to a 4-0 win over Rose-Hulman.

Augustana split a pair of softball games on Monday, February 25 in Clermont, Florida. The Vikings lost to Capital 4-2 in the first game before bouncing back to defeat Roes-Hulman 4-0.

Freshman Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) spun a one-hit gem in the second game to lift veteran head coach Kris Kistler's team back into the win column. She struck out five and didn't walk a batter and allowed just a third inning double with one out. Anderson's sparkling performance came on the heels of a fine outing by junior Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) in the first game. Hintz tossed a five hitter but fell victim to some shoddy fielding as she gave up four unearned runs in the fourth.

Augustana is now 3-1 overall and will face Rose-Hulman again tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. and then face SUNY-Canton at 1:00 p.m.

02/25/13 - CAPITAL 4, AUGUSTANA 2

CLERMONT, Florida - One bad inning, with four unearned runs scoring, proved to be the difference on Monday, February 25 as Augustana fell to Capital 4-2 at the NTC Softball Complex in Clermont, Florida.  The loss was the first of the season for the Vikings after they swept Ave Maria the day before by scores of 6-1 and 8-3.

Junior Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) pitched well for Augustana as she went six innings and gave up five hits while striking out eight. Her undoing was the fourth where Capital pushed across four unearned runs with the help of two Viking errors and four hits.

Augustana came back with two runs in the top of the fifth. Sophomore Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) led off with a walk and went to third on a single by freshman Lisa Bartha (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.). Bartha scrambled to second on the throw. Freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) reached on a fielder's choice while Behnke scored on a throwing error and Bartha moved to third. Sophomore Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) singled to right field and scored Bartha to make it 4-2.

Capital's Alyssa Patznick went the distance on the mound, giving up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Besides the singles by Bartha and Teson in the fifth, the other hits for Augustana went to sophomore Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Behnke.

Augustana is now 2-1 on the season while Capital is 1-0.

02/25/13 - AUGUSTANA 4, ROSE-HULMAN 0

CLERMONT, Florida -Freshman Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) made her first collegiate start as a pitcher one to remember as she tossed a one-hitter to lead Augustana to a 4-0 victory over Rose-Hulman on Monday, February 25 in Clermont, Florida. Anderson was in complete control, giving up just a one out double to designated hitter Cassidy Bevington in the third inning. She didn't allow a walk and struck out five.

The Vikings staked Anderson to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  With one out sophomore Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) singled and stole second. Junior shortstop Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) singled to left but Behnke was cut down at the plate trying to score. Watson moved to second on the throw and scored when senior Amanda Johnson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) doubled to right field.

In the fourth Johnson singled to center with one out and gave way to pinch runner Kendra Rakers (Belleville West HS, Millstadt, Ill.). Rakers stole second and romped home on a double by senior catcher Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) to make it 2-0.

In the top of the seventh the Vikings put two more runs on the board. Freshman Jennifer Gray (Lincoln-Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) walked to lead things off and Anderson singled to right field to move Gray to second. Junior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) beat out a bunt single to load the bases. Freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) reached on an error that scored Gray and kept the bases loaded.  Sophomore Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) singled to score Anderson to make it 4-0.
