Vikings second after first day of CCIW

Sophomore Jeff Padesky placed second in the pole vault at the 2013 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track & field championship.

KENOSHA, Wis. - After the first day of competition at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin indoor track & field championships, Augustana finds itself in second place with 33.50 points. The second day of the meet will be on Saturday, February 23 at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The Vikings trail defending champion North Central's first place total of 77.50 points. Augustana is ahead of Carthage (13), Wheaton (10), Illinois Wesleyan (8), Elmhurst (6), Millikin (4) and North Park (2).  

Sophomore Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) had the highest finish for veteran head coach Paul Olsen's charges on Friday night. He placed second in the pole vault with a leap of 14' 11 ½". Senior Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) took third behind Padesky as he also cleared 14' 11 ½".  

Senior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) finished third in the long jump with a leap of 22' 6 ½" and freshman Caleb Ivey (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) took sixth at 22' 0 ¾".  

Augustana got two places in the 5000 also as freshman Keith Sands (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) placed third in 14:55.92 while senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was seventh in 15:16.86.  

The distance medley team of sophomore Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), junior Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.), sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and senior Dennis O'Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) placed fifth in 10:26.09.
