Women's basketball falls in season finale

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - In the final game of the 2012-13 season Augustana put up a good fight before eventually falling to defending NCAA Division III national champion Illinois Wesleyan by a score of 83-67 on Tuesday, February 19 in Bloomington, Illinois. The Titans used a 14-2 run to close out the first half to break open what had been a close game up to that point.
Augustana tied the game at 24-24 with 5:06 remaining in the first half after sophomore Valerie VanRoeyen (Libertyville HS, Grayslake, Ill.) hit one of two free throws. The Titans got back to back three point field goals from Samantha Ellsworth at 4:03 and 3:26 to go in front 30-24.
The only points for Augustana during Wesleyan's 14-2 run were single free throws from junior Amy Hicks (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) at 2:31 and freshman Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) at 1:32.
Junior Jessica Baids (West Chicago HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) scored to start the second half for Augustana and that trimmed the margin to 10 points (38-28). The Titans scored the next seven points to take a 45-28 lead with 18:05 left.
After trailing by as much as 20 (60-40) with 11:30 to play, the Vikings went on a 17-5 run and when Baids scored with 6:00 left, the lead was down to eight points (65-57). Augustana could manage just 10 points the rest of the way, however.
Hicks and Baids led Augustana with 18 points apiece as the two combined to shoot 14-18 from the field. Hicks was a perfect seven of seven including a three point field goal while Baids was seven of 11. Hicks and Baids each pulled down nine rebounds as the Vikings won the battle of the backboards by a count of 42-39.
Also in double figures for Augustana was senior Gianna Pecora (Downers Grove South HS, Darien, Ill.) who had 12 points in her last game in a Viking uniform. Pecora also had seven rebounds with two assists.
Four Illinois Wesleyan players ended in double figures with Taylor Reaber and Katy Seibring leading the way with 14 each. Augustana ends the year 7-18 overall and 2-12 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while the Titans are now 18-7 and 11-3.
