Madison's field house record leads Vikings to victory

Junior Chris Madison set a new field house record in winning the 800 with a time of 1:56.34 at the Valentine's Day Invitational on Thursday, February 14. Sophomore Vincenzo DalPozzo was also under the old mark with a second place time of 1:56.56.

Led by Chris Madison's (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) field house record in the 800 the eighth ranked Augustana men's track & field team rolled to victory in the Valentine's Day Invitational on Thursday, February 14. The Vikings scored 80.50 points to outdistance St. Ambrose (58), Ashford (23.5), Grand View (11) and Mount Mercy (1) in the meet, which was held jointly at the Carver Center and the PepsiCo Recreation Center.

Augustana, ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Division III national poll, won a total of seven events in the meet but the biggest noise was made by Madison. He won the 800 in a new PepsiCo Field house record of 1:56.34. Sophomore Vincenzo DalPozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) took second in the race with a time of 1:56.56, which was also under the existing field house mark.  

Freshman Keith Sands (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) led a one-two-three sweep in the mile as he won with a time of 4:20.80. Sophomore Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was second (4:21.58) and senior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) placed third in 4;23.20. Gornick came back later and won the 1000 in 2:42.18 and he led a one-two-three sweep in that event also. Senior Dennis O'Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) took second (2:42.60) and sophomore Alex Odenkirk (Ironwood Ridge HS, Tucson, Ariz.) placed third (2:45.03).  

The Vikings also swept the 3000 with senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) winning in 8:48.21 while freshman Ethan Koch (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) placed second (8:59.00) and senior Tommy Harris (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) took third (9:00.64).  

Senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) won the 55 in :06.53 and sophomore David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) took the 300 in :35.42. Voland was also third in the 55 hurdles with a time of :07.95. The 1600 relay team of junior Jared Spivey (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.), DalPozzo, freshman Ben Damisch (Burlington Central HS, Elburn, Ill.) and sophomore Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) posted a winning time of 3:30.06. Cline was third in the 55 (:06.62) and Damisch took third in the 200 (:23.49).  

Junior Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.) was second in the 200 in :23.40. Senior Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) took second in the weight throw (51' 0 ¼") and third in the shot (46' 0 ½"). Senior Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared 14' 11 ½" to take second in the pole vault while sophomore Jeff Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) went over the same height and was third.  

Freshman Caleb Ivey (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) was second in the long jump (20' 5") and senior Patrick Callan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) finished third (19' 1 ½"). Sophomore Justin Davidson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) took third in the high jump with a height of 6' 4 ¾" and freshman Alex Meier (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was third in the triple jump with a leap of 38' 4 ¾".
