NAPERVILLE, Ill. - For the second time this season, Augustana senior sprinter Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) has been named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.
Rindone was named "Outstanding Athlete of the Meet" this past Saturday at Grinnell College's Darren Young Invitational, setting new school and meet records in the 400 meters. His time of :48.85 broke the previous Augustana standard, set in 2009 by Kyle Ekberg, by nearly half a second. In addition, Rindone ran the third leg of the Viking 4x400 relay, which won in a time of 3:21.73.
This is Rindone's second CCIW Athlete of the Week award of the 2013 indoor season. He earned conference honors on January 22 after setting school and facility records in the 300 at the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois. Augustana has had three of the league's five winners this season. Senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won CCIW Track Athlete of the Week honors on January 29.
The son of Paul and Jill Rindone of Geneva, Illinois, Alex is now the Augustana indoor record holder in the 60 (:06.95), 200 (:21.97), 300 (:34.57) and 400 (:48.85) meters. He's the school record holder in the outdoor 200 as well, with a time of :21.17 set at the NCAA Division III national meet last year. He is also a member of the school record outdoor 4x200 relay team which ran a 1:27.72 in 2010.
Rindone and his Viking teammates are ranked fourth in the nation as of the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division III Dual-Meet Strength Index.
